  1. Organization of the work

An opening Video SG plenary was held Monday during 14:15–15:15, at which the status of work was reviewed and activities for the current meeting were planned.
    1. AHGs and Breakout Topics

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.1m27323 Ad hoc on Internet Video Coding [Mohammed Raad, Ronggang Wang]

Following the activities of the AHG, a breakout group was established (to be chaired by M. Raad, substituted by R. Wang when necessary). Further analysis was planned for during the week regarding:

  • Assessment of tools proposed on top of ITM3

  • Performance ITM (with new tools) versus AVC anchor and newly proposed alternative (VP8) in terms of SNR/visual performance.

Regarding the alternative method, which had not originally been proposed in the CfP, it was suggested that a more detailed analysis should be performed for one more meeting cycle, with a decision for actions to be made at the next meeting. Besides the performance, the general status in terms of licensing, conditions of transfer to MPEG, software, and copyright requires clarification and better understanding.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.2m27322 Ad hoc on Web Video Coding [Krasimir Kolarov, David Benham, Gaëlle Martin-Cocher, Jesus Sampedro, Dave Singer, Thomas Wiegand]

No additional specific action was planned – FCD progression for 14496-29 is currently on hold.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.3m27320 Ad hoc on MPEG-7 Visual [Miroslaw Bober, Stavros Paschalakis]

No specific action planned – more maintenance work is still needed to update the XM software, to be done depending on available resources of involved experts.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.4m27321 Ad hoc on Compact Descriptors for Visual Search [Miroslaw Bober, Giovanni Cordara, Danilo Pau, Gabriel Takacs]

Following the activities of the AHG, a breakout group was established (chaired by M. Bober, substituted by G. Cordara when necessary). The following action items were assigned to the BoG:

  • Due to the unclear licensing situation of SIFT, the CD should be delayed by one meeting cycle

  • Finalizing the review of CE results and other inputs and make suggestions for updates of TM and WD.

  • Most urgent: Investigate alternatives to SIFT keypoint detection from CE4, in terms of technical properties such as performance and suitability for implementation, and relationship with remaining parts of the processing chain

  • Further investigation will be necessary whether the alternatives resolve the IP issue; this can not be achieved in the BoG, but new information about “hard facts” proving that it would not resolve the issue, brought by experts to the next meeting, would be welcome.

  • To be clarified whether both “H” and “S” modes, which have evolved to perform very similar, are both to be retained in TM and WD.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.5m27324 Ad hoc on MFC [Walt Husak]

Progress to PDAM was planned – aligning work with JCT-3V. This was further discussed in a joint meeting on Tuesday.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.6m27328 Ad hoc on Reconfigurable Media Coding [Christian Tulvan, Mickael Raulet]

Few video related documents were identified in this area – consideration was deferred to the Wednesday video plenary.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.7m27341 Ad hoc on Study of interlace coding in MPEG HEVC [Arianne Hinds, Yasser Syed, Jean-Marc Thiesse]

For joint meeting with Requirements SG.

4.2.0.1.1.1.1.1.8m27342 Ad hoc on still image coding using MPEG HEVC [Touradj Ebrahimi, Jörn Ostermann]

For joint meeting with Requirements SG.
