15MPEG-4 Audio
In a joint meeting with Audio, Video and Requirements, the implications of UHDTV on audio were discussed. UHDTV will have a viewing distance of about 1m resulting in a viewing angle of about 100 degrees (Figure 1). It is assumed that standard audio transmissions like 7.1 multi-channel will not provide sufficient localization of an audio source. Given the screen sizes, left-right as well as top-bottom localization will be required. WP3C developed a preliminary draft for 3D sound with a hierarchy of surround sound systems including 22.2, 12.2, 10.2, 7.1, and 6.1.
As a further requirement, a large sweet spot for the viewers was identified. Possible work areas for MPEG include also the rendering of audio signals with the number of speakers smaller than the number of transmitted channels.
Figure 1 - UHDTV in the living room will have a viewing distance of about 1m which requires a very precise localization of audio sources.
