Reconfigurable Graphics Coding

m17309 Case study of 3DMCe implementation in RVC framework using HOPES

3DMCe implementation based on RGC. Implementation of the decoder, implementation of some FU for 3DMC and IC. The FUs are implemented based on HOPTES. RVC is using OpenDF (CAL). The FND (functional unit network description) – the XML is generated by HOPES.

Implementation results show that the new implemtation takes 15% more than the original code (for 3DMCe)

HOPES: retargetable parallel programming framework was introduced in 2004. HOPES allow native C and C++. HOPES is also proposed as alternative tool for RVC. Each task can be executed on different processors.

HOPES license: provided for free to MPEG people.

Supported Plateforme: Linux and WS.



Resolutions

- Include a resolution on the great interest in RVC and that we plan to start a new project

- One mandate in the AhG related to the modalities to share the existent work with other members of 3DG

- design the new CE and indicates the way how to use the framework

Status on the AFX & Part 25 conformance and Reference Software

- Conformance for SC3DMC in part 25: the files were generated (encoded) and the conformance was established by decoding them and comparing with initial COLLADA files (visualization with a COLLADA player). To generate the files for cow, dance and eagle.

Work continue to implement the SC3DMC in the MXM Graphics engine and use OGRE as a viewer for these files

2General issues

2.1General discussion

2.1.1Reference Software


It is recalled that the source code of both decoder AND encoder should be provided as part of the Reference Software for all technologies to be adopted in MPEG standards. Moreover, not providing the complete software for a published technology shall conduct to the removal of the corresponding technical specification from the standard.

Currently all the AFX tools published in the third edition are supported by both encoder and decoder implementation.


2.1.2Web site


OrangeLabs announced interrupting the maintenance of the group web-site. A call for volunteers is now issued. In the meantime 3DGC contributors are asked to check the web-site and provide comments on the current version of the web-site.

4.3Joint activities

4.3.1MPEG-V - Information Exchange with Virtual Worlds (formally Metaverse)


Several joints meetings were carried out during the week related to MPEG-V. The 3DG interests were related to avatar characteristics, virtual object characteristics, manners to control the avatar by using real devices and manners to attach haptic properties on virtual objects. However, all the 4 parts of MPEG-V were extensively reviewed during several joint meetings between 3DG and Systems.
The extensive summary of these activities is provided in MPEG-V AhG Report (m17096) and Systems final report as well as in the Disposition of Comments Reports related to MPEG-V outputted from this meeting.

4.3.2MXM


A joint meeting with MXM group took place to review the FootPrint related contribution. The recommendation of this contribution was accepted.

4.3.3Reconfigurable Graphics Coding


A joint meeting with Video RVC group took place to review the related contributions. The resolutions are reported in the table above.
