A proposal for a new profile for surveillance videos did not find sufficient support in the MPEG membership.
Several companies are investing in services which combine the camera of a mobile phone with the network and a compute service in order to help mobile phone users to identify contents in the image of their camera. Figure 2 shows an example. Currently, the mobile phone sends the image in order to use the server service. Replacing the image by features representing the image can reduce the size of the information to be transmitted to the server to less than 400 bits.
At this point, industrial support for such a service, requirements for a standard defining the representation of features and the scope of the standard need to be defined. N11227 Vision, Applications and Requirements for Mobile Visual Search (MVS) summarizes initial thoughts on these topics. Further discussions are carried out within the MPEG-7 adhoc group.
