4Task group activities 4.1Joint meetings 4.1.1Audio for HVC Thursday 1400-1500
The Requirements Chair presented a list of HVC application scenarios. They are listed hear and discussion for each is recorded.
Home Cinema – It is envisioned that HVC visual displays will be 2 meters wide. This gives the possibility of an easy deployment of more speakers integrated into the video display.
Since NHK targets its Hi-Vision technology at the home cinema market, an NHK expert gave a short presentation on the NHK Hi-Vision technology.
Due to the large video display, there is the need for a stable and very wide angle sound stage. Hence, the NHK system uses 10 front speakers in three layers (high, mid, low). This audio-visual presentation is able to tightly link sound cues to visual cues. NHK uses a seven “tall boy” 3-elment speaker cabinets for the home cinema setup. This is captured in the following diagram. If the video screen is 1 meter tall this implies a viewing distance of under 1 meter, and this clearly places the audience in the audio near field.
HNK is working with other standards bodies: SMPTE 2036-2008 “UHDTV” and ITU-R WB6C Recommendation ITU-R BS.[3DSound]. The latter supports a hierarchy of loudspeaker presentations. An MPEG opportunity would be to compress a 22 channel audio program and to render to 22.2 or to a lower hierarchy of loudspeakers (e.g. 12.2).
Theatre Cinema – HVC competes with the current digital cinema rollout, hence this is not considered a primary target market for HVC.
