2MPEG-4 Simple Studio Profile Levels 5 & 6 and MPEG-4 Part 2 corrigendum
The amendment work to support larger formats (beyond 1920x1080) with MPEG-4 simple studio profile, as well as the associated conformance testing specifications, were progressed for FPDAM. All changes from the Study documents of the 83rd meeting were adopted. The corrigendum of part 2, which so far contained some necessary modifications for implementation of the larger formats, now also includes the correction of the wrong gamma transfer equation reported in M15471.

3Development of AVC
The video subgroup approved the ISO/IEC standard related output documents that were produced during the 27th JVT meeting which was held with partial overlap in Geneva (under auspices of ITU-T SG 16). Important work items in this context were as follows
-
Further work on conformance testing for both new professional profiles and SVC, which is reflected in “Study of FPDAM” documents
-
Finalization of reference software for new professional profiles
-
Work on MVC (Study of FPDAM and associated reference software, ongoing exploration of new coding tools in JMVM)
-
Preparation of software and conformance FPDAM for Scalable Video Coding
-
Further improvement work on the corrigendum (Cor.1 of 2008 ed.) which was originally started in Antalya.
In the development of Video Surveillance Application Format, the need was identified to use a currently undefined subset of AVC coding tool features that are in common between the Baseline, Main and High profiles (N9959). Moreover MPEG had already sought the opinion of National Bodies regarding the possibility of defining a new AVC profile with the same characteristics. MPEG thanks the USNB, JNB and KNB for their valuable responses and has issued a liaison document to external organisations (N9818 to DVB TM, N9956 to 3GPP2, and N9957 to 3GPP) that seem to have specified the use of the said subset, requesting them to provide the requirements that have driven their choice. Depending on the content of the responses and keeping in consideration the request coming from the Video Surveillance Application Format MPEG may decide to ask JVT to specify such a profile.
Various changes and editorial clarifications related to high-level syntax and HRD / buffer management have been included in the MVC Study of FPDAM text. The specification does not include any new coding tools at the macroblock level or below. According to the investigations performed in the JVT, such new tools could currently give an estimated additional bit rate savings of 12% (previous meeting: 9%) as compared to the “Multiview High Profile” which is currently specified in the FPDAM. Further study on improvements, as well as industry input in terms of application requirements, appears necessary to decide whether it would be appropriate to define a second MVC profile, possibly containing new compression-improving coding tools. Currently, it appears that these tools are not mature enough (typically providing high gain for some sequences and minor gain for most), nor is it fully clear whether the test set on which the investigations are performed is fully representative for the envisaged MVC applications.
Regarding MVC software, it was decided to split the previous JMVM software package into the part that relates to the current FPDAM technology (this part is now designated as a working draft for MVC reference software) and the remaining JMVM which is to be used for further explorations in new coding tools.
