| 2General issues 2.1General discussion 2.1.1Reference Software
It is recalled that the source code of both decoder AND encoder should be provided as part of the Reference Software for all technologies to be adopted in MPEG standards. Moreover, not providing the complete software for a published technology shall conduct to the removal of the corresponding technical specification from the standard.
2.1.2Web site
OrangeLabs proposed a new version of the web site, now available at www.mpeg-3dgc.com. The goal of the web site is to disseminate the group activities (documents, software and demonstration), to maintain the FAQ and to be active in providing answers through the use of the Forum. 3DGC contributors are kindly asked to check the web-site and provide comments.

TFAN : A low complexity approach for static 3D mesh compression
|
Authors
|
Khaled Mamou, Titus Zaharia, Françoise Prêteux
|
Summary
|
The contribution proposes a module for connectivity analysis based on triangle fan decomposition.
|
Resolution
|
Consider the proposed method in the CE on the Scalable Complexity 3D Mesh Encoding as the most efficient method.

Comments on the results of the CfP:
- Three institutions showed interest in providing new technologies for Low Complexity Mesh Coding. Several components are common to the four proposed techniques (i.e. quantization), but each introduces specific modules in order to address the compromise between performance and complexity. With respect to existent MPEG-4 tools for compression 3D graphics (BIFS and 3DMC) it is recognized the following position of the proposed tools in the bi-dimensional space of complexity/performance:
It is accepted that the new schema should cover a broader range of configurations complexity/performance, thus it should be investigated in the core experiment how combination of the different modules from the four proposed technologies is possible. Starting from now, the activity is named "Scalable Complexity 3D Mesh Compression".
3.1.1Scene partitioning
SP is followed as a joint activity between Systems and 3DGC. The technology is integrated in Part 11. There was no joint meeting with Systems on this topic during this meeting.
SP specification is promoted and the activity on conformance and reference software is initiated.
3.2Profiles 3.3Maintenance 3.3.1Node Templates
Title
|
Node Templates V7 and V8
|
Authors
|
Patrick Gioia, Ivica Arsov, Marius Preda
|
Summary
|
How we worked up to now:
- BIFS nodes are proposed in various MPEG-4 Parts (e.g. Part 16)
- A templatesN.txt is proposed for each amendment
- Based on templatesN.txt the following data is obtained by running scripts:
- node codes table that is attached to Part 11 (a copy of it is also included in Part 16)
- code source for IM1 (Nodes.cpp, Nodes.h, MPEG-J Interface, …)
Current Problem:
- The scripts above are not available to MPEG
Consequences:
- V7 is wrong in Part 11 but correct in IM1
- V8 is not implemented in IM1
- V9 implementation in IM1 was manually added as an extension of V7
|
Note
|
The contribution was discussed jointly with Systems group
|
Resolution1
|
1. Use GPAC for creating the node tables
2. Update GPAC for being able to generate IM1 code
|
Note2
|
At Marius's request, Mikael generated the node tables and IM1 code for V7, V8 and V9
|
Resolution2
|
Update the IM1 with the code generated by Mikael and correct the conformance bitstreams for AFX AMD1

- appoint a super-user for each MPEG sub-group with the main goal of instructing the rest of the sub-group on how to use the SVN
- super-users should meet every MPEG meeting to solve potential problems
- for 3DGC super-user is Mark Callow
- Patrick Gioia will upload the latest version of IM1 on the SVN

Resolution
|
- ask the contributors for commitment in providing the source code; if no commitment until the end of the week, issue a resolution on the possibility to remove the technologies from the standard

3.7.2Future of 3D Graphics Compression
Open discussion
-
look closer the relation between bitstream syntax (decoding) and rendering
-
low complexity moving mesh compression
-
our representation should be optimized (wrt decoding algorithm) for rendering
-
image compression algorithms that allows HR and wide color range (HDRI – High Dynamic Range Image)
-
quantization other than uniform may increase the performances
-
Shaders (example with hyper texture that should be encoded in a specific way to take advantage on the decoding and rendering on the GPU)
-
Procedural geometry, texture and animation for background objects with the goal of reducing the data transfer.
