IPPS TAN:01/2

Material Science Group. Support started in 1976 and was concluded in 2008 followed by interim support within Sida’s bilateral program with Addis Ababa University in 2009. The group was not included in the next phase of the bilateral program, and ISP support was reinstated in 2018.
Objectives

The overall goal of the activity is to have an extensive training of young scientists and technologists through postgraduate programs in order to sustain the availability of such carders as a means to enhance societal development and poverty reduction.

The support started in 1999, and was concluded in 2008 followed by interim support within Sida’s bilateral program with Makerere University in 2009. The years 2010-2014 the group was part of the bilateral program, but it was not included in the next phase of the Sida program. ISP support was reinstated in 2015, not to lose the investments.
Objectives

The overall goal of the project is to strengthen capacity for research in environmental analytical chemistry at Makerere University through collaboration with international institutions.

IPICS UGA:02 – Green Chemistry for Sustainable Chemical Processing. Fundamental studies on environmental NPS derivatives

The support started in 2003, and was concluded in 2008 followed by interim support within Sida’s bilateral program with Makerere University in 2009. The years 2010-2014 the group was part of the bilateral program, but it was not included in the next phase of the Sida program. ISP support was reinstated in 2016, not to lose the investments.
Objectives

The overall goal of the study is to develop catalytic systems for the conversion of carbon dioxide into useful chemical products for application in different fields. For the grant period 2016-2018 the first part of the study is focused on developing systems for the coupling of CO2 and epoxides; the second part is focused on the direct oxidative carboxylation of olefins using a green oxidant in the presence of CO2; and the last part is focused on the copolymerization of epoxides and CO2 to produce biodegradable polymers.

IPPS UGA:01/1 – Materials Science and Solar Energy
ISP support to this group started in 1989, and was concluded in 2008 followed by interim support within Sida’s bilateral program with Makerere University in 2009. The group was not included in the next phase of the bilateral program, and ISP support was reinstated in 2011.
Objectives

The research activity aims at investigating both the physical and microstructures of obliquely deposited silver films sandwiched between two dielectrics materials (e.g. ZnS/Ag/ZnS).

Strategy to achieve goals

  • To fabricate obliquely deposited silver films sandwich between two dielectric materials

  • To characterize such media optically and electrically and structurally

  • To develop theoretical models that describes the optical properties of obliquely deposited films

  • To build research capacity in the area of thin films at Makerere University in terms of training graduate students, and improving infrastructure.

The group is part of MSSEESA
