IPMS EAUMP – East African Universities Mathematics Programme

This is activity is a network between the mathematics departments at University of Nairobi (UoN; Kenya), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM; Tanzania), Makerere University (Mak; Uganda), University of Rwanda (UR; Rwanda) and University of Zambia (UNZA; Zambia). The three first departments have been supported by ISP through this network since 2002, and the two latter since they joined the network in 2009. The network has one coordinator at each node (the Head of Department, or someone appointed by the Head of Department) and one over-all coordinator (a position which is held at one of the nodes for a period of three years, and then it rotates). The duties of the Internetwork coordinator is to establish regional and interregional contacts and fund raising.
Support started in 2002.
Objective

• 
  Capacity building through PhD, Postdocs and MSc. Capacity is mainly in Pure Mathematics and new areas of mathematics. We have identified, through competitive basis, ideal persons to take on the training opportunities that are available under EAUMP
  
• 
  Introduce new areas of mathematics in the region thus calling for graduate programmes/curriculum reviews. Both MSc degrees have been refocused. The MSc in Mathematics is now entirely Pure Mathematics and the MSc in Mathematical Modelling is purely Applied Mathematics. The University had recommended a merger of the two programmes but the Department wishes to run them separately.
  
• 
  Regional schools, workshops and conferences for graduate students and researchers. We have supported staff and students to attend these activities.
  
• 
  Joint research projects and publications. The research done jointly has resulted into joint publications as seen on the publications list.
  
• 
  Improve research facilities in the region. We have acquired equipment that has helped to promote teaching and research in the Department.
  
• 
  Acquisition of graduate text books and journals. We have bought reference text books for graduate students most of them, in new areas of mathematics. We have also taken advantage of online graduate textbooks to cut costs on this goal. However, we have not subscribed to any journals as most articles can be got online.
  
• 
  Build international cooperation and links in various areas of mathematics. Here, we have joint activities that we share with other universities: Uppsala, Malardalen, KTH, Stockholm, Bath, Chalmers, Reading, Linkoping, Lappeenranta, and Tampere. We also have links to Southern Africa countries through SAMSA and other ISP supported networks in South East Asia through inter-network cooperation.

  Promote Staff exchange in the region. There is improved mobility of staff especially to give graduate lectures, attend Ph.D/MSc defenses, and carry out external examination activities in the region.
  
• 
  Collaboration with Sida bilateral activities in the region through holding joint events.
