[57] A composite armor structure (2) for ballistically protecting a gap (8) from an impacting projectile threat and for use with at least one ballistic armor module (M1), the gap extending along a margin (6a) of the module (1), between and around said at least one module the structure comprising a body (10) having a protection portion (25) including a ceramic material and designed to span at least a majority of the area of said gap, and a carrier portion (26) supporting said protection portion and designed to extend beyond the gap to overlap with said margin, when viewed from a perspective of the impacting projectile threat (4), said carrier portion being made of a material different from said ceramic material, characterised in that said body consists of at least a top (15a), a bottom (15b), and an intermediate (12) layer, the intermediate layer being covered by the top and bottom (15b) layers and being formed with a cut-out defining with the top and bottom (15b) layers a closed cavity (20), said ceramic material being in the form of at least one layer of ceramic bodies said cavity carrying said ceramic bodies and constituting said protection portion.
