Abstract
KÜLTEGIN OR KÖL TEGIN?
Köl tegin is a historical personality in the (Kök) Turk kaghanate, for whom a honorary stone inscription was erected (Orhun I). The Turcologists still debate on the initial word in his name whether it is “kül” or “köl”, an ancient turkic title. Louis Bazın’s theory, that the word should be pronounced like “köl”, in association with “lake” (i.e. “göl”; that is intelligence, courage, virtue etc. as vast as a lake) seems plausible. Detailed phonetical, semantic and etymological analysis point to the same direction, which is supported by Mahmūd al kāšġarī’s major work.
