ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION BY CIRCULAR
The following items were circulated to Faculty Board members for noting, consideration and endorsement on 17 January 2011. 1a. FACULTY BOARD NOMINATIONS 2011/2012REF:
Members noted that a call had been made for nominations to the Faculty Board towards the end of last year. As the number of nominations did not exceed the number of vacant positions available for the various categories, no election had been held. A copy of the elected representatives to the Board for the term 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2012 had been attached to the circular.
Members noted the vote of thanks from the Vice-Dean to Mrs Inga Carr, Ms Erica Hodgson, Mr Hubert Jurkiewicz, Dr Peter Mark, Professor Tim St Pierre and W/Professor Alice Vrielink for their contributions to the Board during their term of office.

b. PROMOTIONS REF:
Members noted that the Vice-Dean on behalf of the Faculty, congratulated the following on their promotions:

  • David Lloyd (School of Psychology), to Winthrop Professor (Level E)

2. AMENDMENTS TO CONDITIONS OF TED MASLEN SCHOLARSHIP TO ALIGN WITH NEW COURSES 2012 REF: F20114
Members noted that as a scholarship for commencing students, the conditions for the Ted Maslen Scholarship needed to be amended to align them with New Courses 2012. This task had been undertaken by the Academic Policy Services (Legislative) late last year. The main changes were noted:

  • Purpose – The purpose of the scholarship had been changed to state that students must pursue an undergraduate degree course with a Science major taught by the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences;

  • Eligibility Requirements – this had been changed to state that to be eligible to apply for the scholarship, an applicant must be eligible to enrol in an undergraduate degree course at the University.

Members also noted that the conditions of this Scholarship had been reformatted so that they conformed to the current template. The amendments had been approved in November 2010 by the

Vice-Dean who had delegated authority from the Board for approval of standard scholarship conditions. A copy of the amended conditions had been attached to the circular.
RESOLVED – 1

to endorse the amendments to the conditions of the Ted Maslen Scholarship as set out in attachment B to the circular, subject to final drafting by the Legislative Committee.

3. PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES (51330) AND MASTER OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES (52530) REF: F6294
The School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences (BBCS), had proposed some changes effective semester 2 2011, to the Graduate Diploma and Master of Infectious Diseases with a view to enhancing the viability of these courses. The proposed changes would align with the recommendations arising from the recent Review of the Master of Infectious Diseases as well as with NC2012.
Currently, the Graduate Diploma and the Master of Infectious Diseases comprised three separate specialised streams i.e. Medical Microbiology; Tropical Infectious Diseases; and Public and Environmental Health Microbiology. The School had proposed that these streams be deleted. Consequently, this meant that some of the Part 2 units needed to be deleted and some of the unit names amended in order to accommodate the change to the course structure.
RESOLVED – 2

to recommend to Academic Council that the following changes be endorsed, effective semester 2 2011:

(i) Deletion of the specialised streams i.e. Medical Microbiology; Tropical Infectious Diseases; and Public and Environmental Health Microbiology in the Graduate Diploma and Master of Infectious Diseases;
(ii) Deletion of the following units:

  • MICR8843 Recent Advances in Medical Microbiology Part 2;

  • MICR8844 Tropical, Travel and Remote Area Infectious Diseases Part 2;

  • MICR8845 Public and Environmental Health Microbiology Part 2

  • MICR8837 Infectious Diseases of Public and Environmental Health Importance

(iii) Renaming of the following units:

Proposed name

MICR8832 Recent Advances in Medical Microbiology Part 1

MICR8832 Diagnostic Medical Microbiology

MICR8834 Tropical, Travel and Remote Area Infectious Diseases Part 1

MICR8834 Tropical, Travel and Remote Area Infectious Diseases

MICR8836 Public and Environmental Health Microbiology Part 1

(iv) Removal of SCIE2203 Bioinformatics and SCIE2225 Molecular Biology from the course as undergraduate units were no longer permitted in NC2012 and material from these units were already covered in other units in the course; and

(v) the consequential changes to the rules as set out in attachment C4 to C10 to the circular, subject to final drafting by the Legislative Committee.
