Mrs K. says her Aunt, Mrs P.H. Thompson died in Chattanooga Tenn & her husband died here & both are buried in the Hazleton Cemetery here.
Mrs K. says her mother, Mary Margaret Markle, wife of William Griffin died in Milton Pa on July 15, 1908 & is buried in the Milton cem right in the town.
A fine obituary states that she left 3 sons & 2 daughters & the names in the order of their ages are:
John Markle, Emma Elizabeth, Benjamin, living at the old Homestead No Centre St, Milton Pa has his parents bible with record. Clarence and Clara now wife of Luther M. Smith also in Milton Pa living on Stanton Ave has two daughters, Clarence is married & lives on Chestnut St Milton Pa & has 3 daughters & one son. Benjamin Griffin is unmarried & John M. died & is buried in Milton in his mother's lot & has a marker.
Emma Elizabeth Griffin was born July 30, 1855 at Providence Luzerne Co Pa where all five of the children were born. She married May 18, 1880 at Williamsport Pa by Rev Clark to William Lewis Kohler who was born June 18, 1848 the son of Jonas Kohler & his wife Martha _______. No issue. He was foreman of the Hazleton Mfg Co & a chip from a bolt flew & cut the eyes so that he is totally blind. This was in 1893. They were preparing to go to World's Fair & instead went to a Hospital at Phila to try [to] save his sight.
V10 Page 271
Mrs K. shows me an obituary of Miss Anne Markle who died at her home on Mahoning Street & Garfield Ave Milton Pa about Mch 30, 1911 from the effects of a fall on the ice on Elm St 7 wks before breaking her left hip. States she was one of the oldest native born citizens of Milton being born in this Borough Aug 1829 & being then in her 82d yr. She was the daughter of Jacob & Harriet (Eckert) Markle. Her father & John Markle were brothers, the latter being the father of Mrs Margaret Griffen & the late Geo B. Markle who was the father of Mrs Carl Dahlstrom of Ardmore, Mrs Herman Hessenbruch of Phila & Geo B. Jr, John & Alvan Markle of Hazleton. She was an esteemed & lovable woman. She was member of First Baptist church.
Mrs K. says Miss Anna is buried in front of the vault & thinks Miss Anna had a sister who is buried in same lot. She says that Zachariah Markle buried in another lot in same cemetery was a half brother of Anna. Thinks Zachariah was a widower, but without children. Mrs K. says Miss Georgia Derickson now married & living in Milton Pa can give more Markle data. Her mother's mother was Aunt Katie Markle who married a Fulmer & who was a sister of John Markle.
V10 Page 272
John & Jacob had a brother Christian Markle. Alvan speaks of John at Sunbury & his sister Mrs Cadwallader also there & Mrs K. says Mrs C. was a first cousin of her mother so they are probably children of Christian. Georgia Derrickson will no doubt be able to give data in more detail. Alvan said Wm P. Bonbright's of NY City, mother was Markle, but Mrs K. never heard of them. Ask George. Georgia's father, Mr Derrickson & his wife were first cousins & ask her if her father's mother was a Markle. Mrs K. thinks Georgia's mother's mother & her father's mother were the two sisters of her grandfather John Markle. Mrs Kohler says they moved here in 1883. Look for Jacob Markle's will at Milton Pa.

in 1609 which he believes, but I don't & then a hundred years later, made their way down the Susquehannah River in boats to Harrisburg & then up Swatara Creek through Lebanon Co Pa to Berks & Moslem Creek. He said Zachariah Markle, a relative lived at Danville Pa. see Mrs Kohler's statement & that John Markle & his sister, Mrs Cadwallader of Sunbury Pa were also relatives. Also said Wm P. Bonbright the broker NY was related, his mother being a Markle.
He said Geo B. Miller of Lewisburg Pa was related but Mrs Kohler knew nothing of it.
He said there was a valuable record in the books about the Markles which you can learn about at the Wyoming Hist Society at Wilkes Barre Pa.
He thought Bright's mother at Reading Pa was a Markle but John Markle's bible shows that his wife's maiden name was Bright & the relationship evidently comes from that connection. It was a great find in his sending me to Mrs Kohler & finding their grandfather John Markle's bible. Mrs Kohler is a large heavy set woman very like the cousin Cyrus family of Markles. Alvan said when they came down to him they
V10 Page 279
had about run out of names & a letter written by his mother to his oldest sister who was 12 or 13 yrs older than him states that after his birth, his father Geo B. Markle Sr sat down with the bible & commenced going through it to hunt a name & when he came to the 36th chapter of Genesis & 23d verse, he found the name Alvan which pleased him & so he looked no further & called him Alvan. He said he was born Aug 29, 1861. He said Miss Anna Markle of Milton Pa who died 12 yrs ago was a cousin of his father & that the Derricksons were also relatives on the Markle side. it was news to me that Alvan was a bible name. It is now 10:20 PM & as I wasn't in bed at all last night, nor slept any then or today, I will get ready for bed & get up early in the morning & try to figure out my itinerary for going the many places my slips call for.

Hazleton Pa Cemetery on Vine St Sept 2, 1923 8:33 AM I walked to the office Building & Sexton Frank Walser who has been in charge since Jany 1, 1901 took me to the Thompson & Jack graves, the lost being near together almost adjoining, just north of the office bldg. V10 Page 282
He said he was "baching" it & he & his brother were going to the Kiwanis Club for lunch, his wife being away & his mother, who he sd was 80 I believe being up at Providence R.I. She is a descendant of Roger Williams through a daughter of his. He took me upstairs & showed me on the wall the pictures of his three ascending ancestors all preachers viz: Alex B., Alexander & Robert, the latter, Robert being son of another Robert, who was a church elder at Glasgow Scotland. He has considerable information about the first two Roberts which a relative from Scotland dug out of different Histories & sent him. He said he wd at his leisure write it off & send to me. He took down some of the things I told him & was much interested in the statement I gave him that they were French Huguenots & spelled their name Jacques. He said his daughter had asked if they couldn't change their name to that spelling. He said it was a tradition in their family that they were descended from Huguenots, but they had no corroborating evidence before. He mentioned several of his father's sisters who married into prominent families in Great Britain & one had married Alexander Ramsay & their son is the man who was first successful in restoring the sight of a person who had been
V10 Page 283
born blind & for his wonderful skill therein had been knighted by Queen Victoria I think & is now Sir Alexander Ramsay & is his first cousin. I bid them both adieu at 10:05 AM & walked out Vine St to W Broad & down to the Bank to see Alvan Markle Sr & Jr & bid them goodbye & was:
At Markle Banking & Trust Co No 8 W. Broad St Hazleton Pa Sept 25, 1923 10:22 AM
Alvan Jr took me back to his father's office & he was very gracious & kind as he had been yesterday & said his wife spoke of knowing of me through Ada Wentz, wife of Dr John L. Wentz, who with their daughter Dorothy who is married are all, he said, living in Scranton Pa. He said Dr Wentz got to playing the races & went bad. I told him of finding his grandfather John Markle's bible yesterday at 7*Mrs Kohler's & of it disclosing that he was son of Christian & Mary Markle. He said the address of his sister was Mrs Ida M. Hessenbruch Wynnewood Pa. His sister who died last week was Clora Markle Dahlstrom & her surviving husband's address who would likely have her father's bible she got is Carl A. Dahlstrom, 43 Linwood Ave Ardmore Pa
V10 Page 284
Alvan Sr said the name of his Uncle that married his Aunt Emma J. Markle was Peletiah Haley Thompson who came here from St Louis Mo. He has a brother in St Louis Mo named Charles & he named a son for this brother, Ario Markle Thompson, son of P.H.& E. Thompson in Tennesse & his address is: Ario M. Thompson, Signal Mountain, Chattanooga Tenn. where he is connected with a lumber concern.
Alvan thought the John Markle at Sunbury who was brother of Mrs Cadwallader & who was not married & he thought Mrs Cadwallader had one child. He said both died in Sunbury Pa. Look up their wills & her descendants. Mr Alvan Markle's youngest son, John Markle, a short heavy set stocky young man came in & he introduced me. He said he was born May 22, 1902.
Alvan did not know who Georgia Derrickson at Milton Pa had married but recalled knowing Mame & Sade [sic] Derrickson, spinsters, who are buried at Milton Pa & also a Samuel Derrickson of New York City who was of the family & lived then at Washington Square the fashionable part of NY & was an old time friend of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. As I came out I asked Alvan Jr
V10 Page 285
when he was born & he said on July 28? 1889.
Alvan Sr sd yesterday that his mother was a Robinson & that she was a descendant of Daniel Boone. He sd today that if there was any further aid he could give, to call on him & he would be very glad to help. He said yesterday that they would move out of their old town house, which they had sold to the Elks or some order, today & he was going to build a new home out of town.
Left at 10:42 AM
I then went across to the Hotel, paid my bill, packed up & walked up W. Broad two blocks & took the 11 AM Mahanoy bus & arrived at the P.O. Delano Pa at 11:45 AM passing through scrub brush mountain land all the thirteen miles of the way. Asking at the P.O. for Mrs Violet Fritz, they said she lived in 3d house up the street around the corner right there to the left & proceeding there was at:

Abe Kerchner was her first child. He lived in Chattanooga Tenn. His wife was Cordelia______ who he married in Scranton Pa. They never had any children. She is dead. Thinks she had one son & three daughters by Hontz. The son had falling fits & died unmarried. Says the daughters were young girls when she was there 53 yrs ago. Thinks some of them would be living in Scranton Pa yet, but don't know whether they were married or not.
Says Uncle "Gede" Gideon was a farmer & thinks he lived in the west. She never saw him, but knows he was married.
She knew her Uncle Abe. She came to visit his son Wm at Raven run & had a stroke at the supper table & died just after saying to his wife

His widow Susannah died in Shenandoah Pa where some of them live now & where the granddaughter Susie now lives. Didn't know to whom she was married but Jacob Mondeck is her second husband. She is daughter of Nathaniel of Abraham.
Some of the children live at Roaring Creek. Says Wm's folks have all left Ravenrun & gone to Roaring Creek. Says to ask Mattie Yost. She is daughter of Mrs Fritz sister Sybilla Welsh, but was taken by her Aunt Susannah Markle & raised. She lives in Conyngham Valley near Rock Glen abt 10 miles fr Hazleton Pa.
