Ira Joseph Rothermel died June 6, 1880

Mr R. said the line between Perry & West Perry Tps was just between here & the John A. Sierer residence.

He also said his grandfather Abraham Rothermel was a double Rothermel, his mother having been a Rothermel, a first cousin of her husband. A line pinned in back of bible said:

"Mother died Oct 25, 1874"

I found a two column newspaper clipping having news item dates of Aug 15, but don't know

(The Aug 15 articles refers to finding a bag of jewels in the manufacturers building, St Louis which had been hidden there 2 yrs before so I think the year is 1906.)
V10 Page 433
what year but was an article giving a sketch of John H. Rothermel & the family when he was nominated for Congress. He is the man I went last year to Reading to see & when I arrived Sept 7, 1922 found he had just died. I brought the article with me, but am to return it so am making note of the salient points of family genealogy.

The article is from the Reading Eagle & is headed with a picture of the stone house in Maidencreek Tp where he was reared & which has been a Rothermel home it says for more than a century. He, however, was born in Richmond Tp, but his parents moved to the other house when he was quite young.

The article traces ancestry to John Rothermel who it says was born in Wachbach a Dutch province in 1688 & in 1708 married Sybilla Zimmerman, a native of the same province & after the birth of six children, he decided to come to America owing to unsettled political conditions. He sailed with his wife & children & a large number of other emigrants, but dying on the voyage, was buried at sea, the family reaching Phila Pa Aug 29, 1730 & during the following year located in what is now Berks Co then Phila Co. The six children were Anna Maria, Lawrence, Paul, Peter, John & Christian.

1. Anna Maria was born in Feby 1712 & was the eldest child & was married in 1729 prior to coming to this country to Peter Fetterolf. They located in Macungie Tp, Lehigh Co Pa where he bought 150 A & where he died Aug 15, 1784 & she a few yrs later. Both buried on the farm which is still in the family.

2. Lawrence Rothermel bought 150 A in Windsor Tp in 1738 & became a leading citizen there. In 1746, he married Miss Kuhns, daughter of David Kuhns of Alburtis by whom he
V10 Page 434
had two children, Leonard, & Maria who married John C. Romig. From this branch are descended the many Rothermels of that section (see his will book 1 page 130)

3. Should be Paul Rothermel purchased 250 A in 1737 in Maidencreek Tp & resided on it during life. He married Catharine Maurer in 1747 & had six children, Peter, Leonard, Paul, John, Jacob & Barbara.

4. Peter Rothermel the great grandfather of the nominee was the 4th child, married & had several children some of whom went west & became founders of homes in Ohio, Indian & Illinois. The names of his children were Daniel, Peter, the grandfather of the nominee, Abraham & Margaret. (See Book 1 pages 127 & 128, I think this is his will, although the newspaper article does not name all the children & the brother Daniel he refers to is omitted from his father's children in the newspaper article)

Peter, the grandfather of the Congressional Candidate was born on the old homestead Sept 1, 1773 & resided during his entire life, a farmer. He was a prominent Democrat & assisted in the nomination of Thomas Jefferson for Pres of the U.S. He died Feby 1, 1856 & is buried on the old homestead which remained in the family until recently. He married on Feby 11, 1795 to Magdalena Iager & was the father of these children: Maria, Catharine, Daniel, Susanna, Peter, Sarah, Anna, Esther Jacob, John, Hannah, Elizabeth, Sybilla, & Abraham. Two of these daughters must have died young & unmarried before their father as he only names 12 children in his will (see Book 1 Page 131)

V10 Page 435
John, the father of Candidate Rothermel was born Apr 8, 1812 in Richmond Tp where he was reared on the farm. After residing there some years, he removed to Maidencreek Tp, where he died Aug 1890. He married Louisa Hoover of Cumrn [best guess] who was born Dec 11, 1827. Thirteen children were born to them viz: Peter, Israel, John H. Katie, Moses, Cyrus, Mary, Lydia, Esther, Wilson H. Annie, Alice & Joseph M..

Dr Wilson H., a brother was coroner of Berks Co & Democratic chairman of 12th ward Reading Pa.

Israel H. now decd another brother was District Atty of Berks Co Pa

Jno H. the candidate has been an active Democrat & delegate to many state & Co conventions & is now chairman of 4th ward, Reading Pa. AT age of 16, he began work in the Blandon Rolling Mills, studied at nights, worked in the Mill barns & was advanced so as to quit manual labor.

5. John Rothermel (this was my great great grandfather) was born in Wachbach, Jany 21, 1722 & purchased a tract of land adjoining his brother Lawrence in 1747, where he lived until his death in 1785. He was married to Mary Sigfried by whom he had the following children: Abraham, Jacob, Daniel & John (there were six more children) Mrs Rothermel passed away in 1809 & was laid to rest with her husband upon the land now owned by Lewis Schaeffer.

6. Christian Rothermel purchased 250 A in 1742 in Maidencreek Tp adjoining the property of his brother Paul. He was the father of these children: Margaret, Sybilla, Magdalena, Amanda Peter & John. (see book 1 Pages 128 & 129 the sill of his widow which shows they have omitted Catharine (if Amanda is Maria) & given John instead of Martin. This Christian is cousin Kate Smith's great grandfather.

"Scroggs Family Origin of Name

In Scotland, a low Scrubby vegetation is called Scroggs. When the Scottish chiefs were killing each other off, Sir William Murry & his brother James were opposing each other & Sir William came of victorious. Sir James & all of his family were supposed to be killed. After the battle, when they were plundering the dead, a babe wrapped in the Murray Plaid was found among the "Scroggs". When it was brought to Sir William, he recognized it as his brother's child and saved its life to rear it with his own children.

It was nicknamed Scroggs & the name stuck to him. The soldiers declaring he should be called for the place in which he was found. So says tradition. Mrs Royce of New Castle Pa says her Uncle Genl Scroggs "looked up" the above in Carnegie Library in Schenley Park Pittsburgh Pa & found it to be true. He also found th descent from Sir William Scroggs & made a note of it; but at his death, the executor burned the papers with others thinking it of no value. Probably it can be traced or found in Scottish Peerage or English Peearge. Sir William Scroggs was a Scotch Judge and one Jefferies was English. The two judges had a legal tussle & Sir William won. He was a notable man. Alexander, Allen, John & James Scroggs were grandsons of Sir William Scroggs and came

from Edinburg, Scotland about the year 1743 & located in Cumberland Co Pa at Big Springs, now called Newville. John went to State of New York. Alexander stayed in Big Springs and after Allen's death, his son John went to Baltimore Md & his (Allen's) widow & rest of family went to Westmoreland Co Pa. James went back to Scotland & married a Miss Jack. Alexander, James' only child went to Kentucky. His son John was a Seceder minister in the State of New York.

Alexander Scroggs was married twice & was the father of 21 children; ten by the first wife, eleven by the second wife. His second wife was 19 yrs old & he 76 yrs old when they were married. (other records I have proves his age to be less). Alexander Scroggs died in the year 1796.
