At residence of Mrs J. Adam Sloyer No 750 Easton Road Hellertown Pa Nov 8, 1923 2:44 PM
Incredible as it may seem, I have been here since 2 PM talking with Mrs Sloyer & her sister Mary Ott, who lives in Bethlehem & came to town for a visit with her sister. They both say that the bible of their father, Marcus Rothermel was given by him in his later days to his grandson Frank Dilliard, son of Elmira Mantana, the oldest daughter of Marcus. He lives at Macada Northampton Co Pa abt 3 miles fr Bethlehem north, toward Nazareth. The bible is in German, but the family record is in English. Mrs Sloyer says that on June 4 & 5th, 1862 there was a great freshet at their old home near or at Lobaughville this Co & her father, mother, her sister Elmira M. her brother B. Frank, Laura Ann & the baby Henry Frederick who died shortly after were all up in a cherry tree
V10 Page 569
from 10 or 11 o'clock the night of the 4th until 11 AM the 5th.
They say that Esther, the sister of her father Marcus married a Dewalt & her son John is still living up about where she died & they think it is Uniontown up north about Union, Lycoming or Northumberland Co. Mrs Ott says she has the address of her brother Silas' widow at home & will get it for me. It is, she says Garfield ST Germantown Pa. One of the Dewalts, a son of Esther lived in Reading Pa his name Augustus. He is dead but might have children there. Hiram also dead was a son. Mrs Sloyer produces a letter dated Apr 18, 1923 from Mary S. Daniel (see page 539) & she says her father always said that Mary Daniel's father Reuben was a first cousin of Marcus (himself) & that Reuben's mother, Betty, was his Aunt. Note Elizabeth the 9th & youngest child of Jacob see his will 1833 when she was 21 & not yet married & this is the party that Marcus said was his Aunt. Mrs Sloyer says that the father of Prof A.C. Rothermel of Kutztown Pa was a cousin (she now says 1st or 2d of her father)
Mrs Sloyer says she never knew any of the brothers & sisters families of her father, but the Heffners, Nolls & Dewalts, never even met any of them, so I can't get the full lines from her that I expected.
Of the families of her brothers & sisters they say as follows:

I got the 12:25 PM bus over in Lehighton Pa near the Exchange Hotel & arrived in Weissport near the Franklin Hotel at 12:37 & went up back of & above the hotel to a small two story frame cottage house with the sign "Beware of the Dog" on the gate. Going in, I knocked front & back & got no response except from the dogs. The cemetery was just above & I went out to a big barracks of a house with doors & window shutters all closed & which looked unoccupied, but knocking, a man answered from within, evidently from a bed, & sd she lived at the cottage above named, but worked out some times at John Heller's sometimes at Mrs Reichart's & to ask at Snyders Store. Going there, they sent me to Mrs Reichart & she pointed out the home of her niece where she thought Mrs Hottenstein might be today. Going there, the niece sd she was not well & was laying down. I had her call her & she went over to her home with me & had me sit down on the bench outside while she went in, appeased the dogs & brought out two big bibles. She is a small slender woman, like her sister Mrs Swartz. The biggest book was the old German Bible of her father Wm W. Rothermel in German printed at Phila Pa by I. Leaving 10:33 AM
New American Hotel Room 29 Manch Chunk Pa Nov 10, 1923 6:33 PM
I left this morning on the 9:14 AM Lehigh Valley train from East Manch Chunk for Weatherly Pa & arrived there about 9:40 AM & will now record in order of conferences there except the one above which I wrote in my book, the others necessarily being penciled. The boy with a delivery wagon at the station pointed out the residence of Mrs Younker across Black Creek & that of Mrs Jacob Presser just across the street & a little above the station where I walked across the lot to the back end & was:
At residence of Mrs Jacob Presser Carbon St Weatherly Pa Nov 10, 1923 9:44 AM
Mrs Presser is a daughter of Adam Rose by his first wife & by his second marriage to Missouri Hontz
V10 Page 589
(nee Markle, dau of Jonas) he became her third husband. Mrs Presser said that he, her father, Adam Rose was born Dec 24, 1849 in Germany & came to America when a young man, with some friends who were coming over because of his unhappy home life by reason of his father's drinking. He died here Feby 6, 1915. She didn't know the name of his parents nor the date of his marriage to Missouri. Missouri Rose's father, Jonas Markle & her brother Daniel lived on adjoining farm out in the Quakake Valley (9 miles out where I was this PM) but Mrs Presser said they had sold out & gone.
Leaving 9:50 AM
I then walked over to Mrs Younker's & what she told me is noted on pages 587 & 588.
She sent her son Geo Wm with me to find the places & we walked up to:
Residence of Engratia (Grace) Miller No 312 3d St Weatherly Pa Nov 10, 1923 10:46 AM
Mrs Miller was up on a step ladder on her front porch washing windows, is black eyed & handsome of the Spanish type & distinctive Mexican (which she is) features. Her daughter by her former husband viz:
V10 Page 590
Etta Kenyon married Mch 27, 1913 Howard C. Markle, brother of Mrs Younkin (see page 567) at Lehighton Pa. She was born at Hazleton Pa Jany 17, 1893, the daughter of Joseph Kenyon & his wife Engricia (Grace) Lopez, Mexican, my informant, now the wife of Henry D. Miller. They have five children living & one dead of whom Ada, Doris & Pearl were born here in Weatherly. Ruth in Bethlehem & the other two in Emans Pa as follows:

Leaving 11:05 AM
We then walked up the same street & crossed over & were at the house adjoining & immediately below the Lutheran Church at;
Residence of Rev Edward E. Stuckert, its pastor Nov 10, 1923 11:11 AM
His wife admitted us & he said his mother's mother was a Markle from Hesse Germany, but he didn't know the name of his mother's mother nor of her father. He said his mother's name was Wolf & she came to this
V10 Page 591
country with her mother when 12 yrs old & was 76 when she died 4 yrs ago which would fix her coming at about 1855. He said her mother had some Markle relatives in Phila but they are not of our line.
We then went over to the next 2d St & were:
At residence of Ed Warner, 2d St Weatherly Pa Nov 10, 1923 11:30 AM
His daughter admitted us & called her father & he called in a Mr Hum. They knew of no Markles about there but said Joel Markle lived 9 miles out in the Quakake Valley so I concluded to get an auto & go out.
Left 11:38 AM
We walked down & across Black Creek at the Upper bridge above the depot to garage of C.L. Nuss where we found L.C. Nuss a black eyed virile man & when I asked him what the big brick bldg on the hill at the head of the street that runs up from the upper bridge was, he said it was the public school bldg presented to the town by Mrs C.M. Schwab who was raised here, the sister of A.D. Dinkey of the U.s. Steel Corp. both of whom with their brother & mother lived
V10 Page 592
in a house on the lot I had walked across two hours before to see Mrs Tracer Presser. He thought their mother must have been a widow as he never remembered their having any father here. Their mother opened a small store on 2d St which she ran for some years. The school building is a fine big one. I bid Mr Nuss goodbye at 11:55 AM on the arrival of Will Doney in a closed auto & hired him to take me out to Joel Markle's. We started at 12 noon & arrived there 12:45 AM only to find he had gone to McAdoo on the milk wagon with Victor Lint? a neighbor. We then drove on 4 miles further to McAdoo but looked over the town without finding him & came back & Victor's wife sd he had gone also to Hazleton but she expected him back any minute so he came right away & Mr Markle got out of his truck & unlocking his little shack we were at:
The home of Joel Markle near Stewarts Water Plug Rush Tp Schuylkill Co Pa Nov 10, 1923 2:25 PM
Mr Markle is a medium tall, slender man with a moustache no whiskers & is active & virile for 79 yrs. He lives in about the most unpretentious
V10 Page 593
shack & worse excuse of a house I have seen, but he has a small egg stove in it & it was comfortable. He has a lounge for a bed, with everything in a jumble in approved bachelor style. I asked him how much he owned & he said he didn't own anything that it was built on two farms & the Tp road & is about 15 ft square. He explained that the line between the two farms run by the stove & he told them that it would take but little off of each & they agreed to let him build on it & occupy it as long as he lived.
He said he was born in the 2d house down the road toward McAdoo in his father's old home, where he had settled when it was all forest about there & built his home & Joel remembered when it was woodland between the house & the barn, in this Rush Tp on Nov 16, 1844, the son of Jonas Markle & his wife Juliann Stewart. He produced a sheet giving his name & theirs as his parents but it was in German.
[margin note reads:] Joel Markle died in Jany or Feby 1926. See book 16 P 570.
He said his father died when he, Joel, was about 50 to 55 yrs old & was 77 yrs old & is buried in Quakake Cem, but does not have a tombstone. Says his mother died around 2 yrs later but he does not recall how old she was. He says
V10 Page 594
his sister Hannah Maria Markle bought a bible & wrote everything in it of when her father & mother were born & died etc. She was not married but had a son to Jim Swartz named Edward Oliver Swartz, who got the bible from his mother after her death. See Book 16 P 615 JVT
She lived with her father & mother when they both died just across the road from here in the frame house he built & then owned, where a "Hunkie" named Valatine Czerilsky (Cherilsky) now lives with a wife & several children.
He says his sister Hannah Maria got everything. She died two to four yrs ago in Phila Pa & her son lives about there somewhere & did work for the Reading RR. He was married but his wife died.
Joel just about remembers his grandmother & says she was a short stout woman as he was young when she died. He is not sure but thinks his grandfather Markle's name was "Abe or Gede" (ie Abraham or Gideon). He gives the names of his grandfather Markle's children as follows: Gideon, Abraham, Jonas & Reuben (he called them Gede, Abe, Jonas & Rube) & Rachel "Lao"
He said Rachel married Lewis Hontz & lived in Scranton Pa. They only had
V10 Page 595
one boy Abe Hontz & he has been dead a long time. She & her husband & son used to come to visit her brother Jonas Markle here & would stay one or two weeks.
He gave the names of his father's children as follows:
Benneville, the oldest was either born dead or died when quite young most likely the latter, then Elizabeth & "Gede" (Gideon) Joel, himself, Daniel, Jacob, Missouri, Amy, Amanda, Hannah Maria, Albert & Ellen the youngest & whose 3d husband Tighlman Driesbach is dead & she lives in Reading Pa with a daughter. His Uncle Gideon went west He thinks to the state of Indiana but don't know what town or Co. He says his father Jonas always said that he himself was born in Berks Co Pa.
Joel's P.O. address is Route 2 Tamaqua Pa. Mrs Moser, eldest daughter of his brother Daniel lives at Quakake Junct where she ha a little patch. Her husband is an engineer & she is abt equidistant from McAdoo & here. Her P.O. wd be Quakake Pa. He says he never saw his grandfather Markle & don't know whether he died in Berks Co or not. He thinks his father, Jonas Markle came here about the time he got
V10 Page 596
married. Thinks the children were all born here with the possible exception of Benneville, but all the others were born in Rush Tp. His father sold the farm & kept a half acre across the road & built the house, now standing there & he & his wife both died there. Dan lived in the next house below where he had 33 acres & built all of the buildings there.
He says a Jim Long who had a store lived at St Nicholas Pa near Mahanoy City whose wife was a Markle from Berks Co Pa. He was older than Joel. Thinks he was 45 to 50 yrs old thirty odd yrs ago. Don't know where he went. He says there are Markles at Lewistown Pa.
Left at 3:17 PM
Driving home, we came past the Quakake Church & Cemetery where the Markles are buried but could find no tombstones.
