At residence of Homer Moody, Howard St, West Newton, Pa Aug 7, 1923 11:25 AM
I arrived here at 11 AM & was recd by Miss Lottie Milligan, granddaughter of Nancy Hough who says she is 79 yrs old. She said Nancy Hough died in 1871 & was, she thought, abt 75 yrs old & is buried at Sewickly Church & she thinks her last husband Joseph Hough was buried up about Barren Run. Says Nancy lost three children with scarlet fever before her mother was married. The name of one of the children was Elizabeth & all three are buried out at the Stone (Sewickly) Church as is their parents, Wm Bell & Nancy Hough.
Miss Milligan has given me a list of her grandmother's children in the order of their ages as she remembers them & I am entering them in a genealogical table commencing on page 130. She has given me a photo of her grandmother's brother Andrew Finley taken at Forest Hill Calif of his second wife taken at Gold Run Calif which he sent to his sister, Nancy & which Miss Milligan says I may keep. His should go in the book. She says her grandmother died at her mother's home out in the country in sight
V10 Page 127
of the Dick Church. Nancy's youngest child, Josephine Hough married Dr Logan Brown, who practiced at Pleasant Unity. She got consumption & insisted on coming to Mrs Milligan, so she & her mother (who had moved from West Newton a year before to live with Josie) taking Miss M. thought, her lot of books with her) both moved to Mrs Milligans where Josie died of consumption in Sept 1871 & her mother died Dec 187[cut off] Josie is buried at Sewickly. Her oldest child, Nancy died young with pneumonia aged abt 1 yr & is buried at Sewickly. Annie married & lives in Greensburg. She don't know her name but says Mrs Dave Markle just this side of the Catholic Church can give her name. Dr Logan brown married again, but has since died & she says Evaline Markle can tell about him. Miss M. says her grandmother had a real old bible which she thought was her mother's bible, but she don't know who got it. She had a goodorner[cut off, no idea what this word is] bible with some records written with some records written in it which she says Rose Ann Pollock got. She got the bible that has the record of her Father's & mother's family in it & her niece, Mrs Moody with her daughter has come in & has gone upstairs to look for it. The James Milligan bible which Miss Moody brought down was printed in NY
V10 Page 128
in 1845 by the American Bible Society, has record of the deaths of Miss Milligan's grandparents & she has also brought in Hitchcock's Analysis of the Bible published in NY in 1871 by A.J. Johnson which has the later records. I am embodying the dates therein given in the table following. She says that after her Aunt Josephine Brown died, her mother, Nancy Hough went to Pleasant Unity & brought some things back & among other, her new good Bible that had the record of the births of her children & gave it to her daughter Rose Ann Pollock & Miss Milligan feels sure that Evaline Markle got it as she thinks none of the other children would want it. There are several slips of paper, yellow with age in the Hitchcock Analysis with the Milligan records which I am copying while waiting for Mrs Moody to come back to give her record.
