At residence of Mrs Lydia E. Woodward No 9 Jefferson St Uniontown Pa Oct 27, 1923 3:33 PM

Coming around here this afternoon I met Chads Chalfant, Lulu's husband, who told me they had heard from Clara, that her sister Susan Cope Pooley was very low with consumption & they thought could not live three weeks. I told him to write Clara saying if she would make the discount sufficient for my funds to reach it, that I would buy her Lackey mtge with Ruth V. Ewing's estate funds just after Jany 1st. Met Richd (Dick) Randolph cor Iowa St & had a talk with him. Mrs Woodward's house is a brick with several steps up & is the first house on left hand side from Church St. She showed me the deed from the DeFord Heirs to Davis her husband made abt 50 yrs ago. She had her son Davis Edgar the youngest of her nine children bring out the old bible of his great grandfather John Woodward from which both covers are gone & which was published by H.C. Carey & I Lea Phila Pa 1823 I copied part of the record but not all, as I had gone expecting to get her father David Brown's bible. she said he had a bible with record but she never got it, but thought her sister Amanda Keener, widow of Oliver M. Keener had gotten it.

Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York City Room 555 2:44 PM Nov 1, 1923

Chas A. Hanna of 15 Rockledge Road, Montclair NJ with office at 77 Cedar St NY City & formerly of Cadiz O was here yesterday afternoon fr 4 to 5:50 PM to see me. He says he is descended from Ann Reynolds, daughter of Mary, the daughter of John Finley of Lurgan Tp & sister of Uncle Squire Andrew Finley of South Huntingdon Tp Westnd Co Pa. She, Mary, married first John T. Thompson, & then Wm Reynolds. Her daughter Ann married John Hanna who was the great grandfather of Chas A. Hanna & was the son of another John Hanna. John & Ann had a son John who lived to be 89, I think & his son Neri, the father of Chas A. lived to be 94 I think evidencing the Finley longevity. I gave him my Anjou Finley family book to look over & return. He spoke of being in Uniontown & Washington Pa early in August looking up the Dickerson genealogy. He said Joshua of Fayette Co was not Pres Harding's ancestor & that it was not Wm but Isaac H. Dickerson who married Charity Van Kirk & that Isaac H. was a son of Joseph, but he had not been able to place Joseph definitely. He said a Dickerson, Thomas, I believe married a daughter of Isaac Pearce of Allegheny Co Pa, son of Elisha of Fayette Co Pa & they had a son Isaac Pearce Dickerson. He has invited me out to his home over some week end.

V10 Page 468
Gustave Anjou came in this morning at 9:30 & was here until 10:15. He brought me the papers of Mrs Virginia Smith of Winchester VA which she loaned him in 1921 & which, she had given me an order for. He also brought & gave me two papers relating to the Mechlenburg NC Jacks, one a certified copy of Patrick Jack's will 1780, Charlotte NC & other papers abt a Samuel Jack there & others. He thought he could give me the line of the Finleys mentioned in the post script of his letter of Oct 20th last & will send it to Uniontown. Asking him about the bible from which he says he got the record of the birth of Michael Finley's children, he said he was in Donough Parish, Glasslough P.O. County Monaghan Ireland & was looking for a cemetery which he thought was near & a lady asked him what he was hunting & he replied he was hunting the g.y. She asked what family he was looking up & he told her the Finley family & she said step in the house, I have an old bible that will interest you & he did & it was there he got the Michael Finley record. He spoke of the lady as Mrs James O'Neill a Protestant, but that her home was at the town of Armagh. This, he sd was in 1900. He could not recall that he got the Finley data for any person in particular, but just took it down for himself & consequently did not work it up so completely. He said he was born Dec 1, 1863 3:25 PM

No 17 E 42 St Tel Murray Hill 7249 at office of W.P. Bonbright & Co New York City Nov 1, 1923 3:45 PM

The young lady said Mr Bonbright was out of town, but thought he would be back in three weeks. JVT

I then took the coach again & walked down to:
Residence of Mrs N.M. Campbell No 158 E 55th St Tel Plaza 4050 New York City Nov 1, 1923 4:10 PM

Mrs Campbell answered from her door, end of hall, first floor & said Mrs Sanderson was bedfast at the Park Ave Hotel where she was stopping with her daughter Mrs Junius who had recently returned from Denver Col. She didn't think she had anything about the Markles, that it was only the McCullough line she ran back. Mrs Campbell is a niece of Mrs Sanderson, but it is on the McCullonde [best guess] side & she is no relation to the Markles. JVT

I then walked up to the:
Hotel Essex, New York City, Cor Madison Ave & 56th ST Nov 1, 1923 4;25 PM

The clerk said Mr & Mrs Drew had left the hotel a month

V10 Page 470
& gone west, their lease having expired. Asking for their address, he turned to his book & sd it was: Mr & Mrs John G. Drew, Railway Express Bldg, St Louis, MO

I left at 4:28 PM & took the St car in front down Madison Ave & was soon at:

Park Ave Hotel cor Park Ave & 33d St New York City, Nov 1, 1923 4:44 PM

The clerk called up Mrs Junius room & got no answer. I then had him page Mrs Junius & she appeared at once from a dining hall where she was having tea with some friends. She took me upstairs on 2d floor to room 259 where her mother, a heavy set fleshy woman was in bed from the effects of a fall she had a few days ago. She doesn't have a wrinkle & has a young looking face.

Mrs Junius then excused herself & said she would go & get rid of her company & come back which she soon did. I then questioned her mother & both of them when she came back & the results of the interview follows. Mrs Junius said she had the family records at her home in Germany & could give some of the dates. She took my address & sd she wd sent them.
V10 Page 471
Mrs Sanderson said her grandmother Deborah Markle, daughter of Uncle Abraham Markle died when she, Mrs S. was 17 yrs old & is buried at East Springfield O which is 16 miles west of Steubenville O. She married 1st Brice Edgington of a Virginia family. He died quite young from injuries received by being jerked by a horse & died from a hemorrhage, aged she thinks 31 yrs. She had four children by him all small & young when he died. Married 2d John McCullough of Virginia (they didn't know his father's name). He was a first cousin to John McCullough who became the husband of her daughter Rachael. She had two children by him.

1. Rachael Edgington, her mother

2. Nancy Edgington

3. Abraham Edgington

4. Martha Edgington

6. Jennie McCullough
1. Rachael Edgington died in the Autumn, thinks Nov of 1846 or 1847 aged but 19 yrs having married when she was 17 yrs old at East Springfield O & was buried there, but later was moved to the Steubenville G.y. & laid beside her husband John McCullough who was born in East Springfield O in Sept 1808 & died at Beaver Pa May 8,

1876 & is buried at the Steubenville Co cemetery. He was son of John McCullough & his wife Margaret Richey & was married at East Springfield O when his wife Rachael was 17 yrs old. They had two children:

1. Margaret Ada McCullough born in East Springfield O July 2, 1845, my informant, along with her daughter. She was named for her grandmother Margaret Richey & for Lord Byron's daughter Ada. She married after the close of the Civil War which delayed earlier contemplated marriage at Beaver Pa by Dr Bollard Rector of Epis Ch at Rochester Pa Charles Rollin Sanderson, who was born in Mesopotamia O May 19, 1826 son of Elisha Sanderson from Woodstock, Vermont & his wife Sarah Grosvenor of Pomfret Coun. They had two boys & two girls:

I. Rachael Edgington Beulah Sanderson born Mch 13, 1869 in Beaver Pa, my joint informant of the afternoon, with her mother. She is a large strong fine formed woman. She married Apr 17, 1911 here in New York City Gustav Edward Junius of Dahlhausen, Ruhr
V10 Page 473
Germany, son of Henry William Junius & his wife Magdalena Koepe, who was born at Unna, Germany June 13, 1868. Both are living Post office Dahlhausen, Rhur, German, she saying "we are Dahlhausen". No issue. He is managing Director of the Dr Otto Co (coking). Their company is Independent of Krupps who have assiduously tried to buy them out, but she says "we are too smart to sell". Asking her abt the troubles with the French army of occupation, she said they were having none, that they had a Socialist Democrat manager of the plant who is smart & intelligent & the French are afraid of that Class & let them alone. Their manager is smart enough to handle them. She graduated at Vassar in 1890. She says they never heard of Mrs Chas Mater.

IV. John Chauncey McCullough Sanderson born Nov 1883 in St Louis Mo, died Nov 1884 in St Louis Mo.

V10 Page 474
2. Brice Edgington McCullough born at East Springfield O. Think he was 2 yrs younger than Mrs Sanderson & died when 2 or 3 months old.
2. Nancy Edgington died unmarried & is buried at Springfield O & thinks has a tombstone. She was engaged to Wm Johnston who was a 49er to California. He had been in Calif for several years & was in business (banking) with her brother Abraham. He came back to be married, took the typhoid fever & died at her, Mrs Sanderson's grandmother's in East Springfield O two weeks before the time set for them to be married.
3. Abraham Edgington was also a 49er. He married when an old bachelor, Mrs Mary Bailey a widow from Alton, Ills whose first husband was a lawyer. No issue. He died of tuberculosis at Virginia City, Nev. He had a large country place outside of the city, which was his home & where he lived for many years. He was very wealthy. He made a will & gave Mrs Huscroft $10,000 & Jennie Hambleton $10,000 & his wife got two or three million dollars. She was extravagant, went to Europe, took her own relations with her & spent it. Thinks he died abt 1876 & is buried at Virginia City. If there, look up his will & tombstone.
V10 Page 475
4. Martha M. Edington married Huscroft. I got her record from Mrs McCauslen Oct 21? 1921.
5. Frank McCullough married in Virginia City Nevada Miss Hattie Cobb & lived at Carson City Nev & both died either there or at Virginia City & had but one child, a son who was being prepared for Harvard College, but never went. I worked all night last night & finished my itinerary at 8:15 AM & I think I have it well mapped out to cover the 104 towns from Allentown to Zion extending as far east as Hellerstown & Phila, west to Altoona North to Lock Haven & Williamsport & South to Harrisburg & Steelton all in Penna without much doubling of routes. I got my breakfast, paid my bill & left on the PRR 10 AM train for Phila where I arrived at 12 o'c noon & took the 12:30 PM train on same road for here, arriving at 1:17 PM. Got a taxi & came out here twelve blocks, got this talismanic room, left my satchel & was driven back to the Court House, went right to the Registers office & went over the will indexes each letter a separate volume & made the notations on pages 476 & 477 when it came 4 o'c, their closing time. As they were still working, I finished the letter T of the Adms Index by 4:22 PM when they were ready to go. I took a St car on Main St in front of the C.H. & came out here & went all through the Norristown Dist Bell Tel book by the time supper or dinner was ready at 6 o'c. The register sd I could get in in the morning at 7:45 AM

I will now note what family names I find in the telephone book:

V10 Page 493
in the suburbs of Phoenixville, Chester Co Pa. They said they would want a book. Mr Finley said his great Aunt Sarah Ann Anderson, mother of Mrs McGlathery who lived to be 94, often told him about the Finley family history & wanted him to write it down but he didn't. She was full of the family lore & once took him to the grave in Tremont Cemetery here of her father David Mck Finley, where he saw the inscription on his tombstone & told him it was a shame that he didn't even know who he was or where he was buried. He said he was once down on the Eastern shore of Maryland where the man he was with told him there had been a family of seven or eight Finley brothers had ruled that section at an early day with an iron hand & were charged even with horse stealing among other crimes. When a small boy down at Cape May NJ, where he was in the soldiers Orphan School he learned to play on the violin I believe & played his best & other Finleys, many of them coming up asked him the names in his family & he told them John, James, William, George, David, Martha etc & they said those same names were in their family & they were no doubt of the same line & they took him to their homes, the best people & homes in the neighborhood. He had his son in law John C.
V10 Page 494
Ehinger who had gone for Edith V. to bring her home in the auto come back & take me to Mrs McGlathery's, she went along so I left at 5:30 PM & we were soon:
At residence of Mrs Mary Elizabeth McGlathery No 524 Cherry St Norristown Pa Nov 3, 1923 5:46 PM

Mrs McGlathery came to the door & Mr Finley introduced me. She took me back to her sitting room & said she was in her 88th year, born Apr 7, 1836 right across the street from where she now lives. She is a slender woman with gray hair is about my height & was not at all feeble, in fact was awaiting the arrival of a friend with whom she was going to some Lodge meeting.

She is the daughter of Abraham Griffith Anderson (son of Alexander Anderson & his wife Mary Griffith) and his wife Sarah Ann Finley who was born Sept 21, 1810 at Penns Grove, Salem Co NJ & died here Feby 21, 1904 in her 94th year. She was the daughter of David McKenstry Finley who is buried in the Tremont Cem here & has a marker. He died when she was a child. She says her cousin, Mrs Ruth Anna Corson has his family bible & also that she sold the Oxford St house this fall & moved
V10 Page 495
to West Phila Pa. She says she is only about 70 yrs old, but knows more than she does about the Finley family. She don't know the name of the father of her grandfather David McKenstry Finley, but thinks he died at Penns Grove NJ. Says David was an old or elderly man when he came here in 1828. Of his brothers & sisters, she recalled:

Tamzan who married a Strutch

Rebecca who married a Camp

Sarah who married a Fogg

Mary Casper who married

Andrew Finley, brother who lived in Phila Pa

Rushie Finley brother who lived in Phila Pa both married & had children

She went upstairs & brought down the old bible of her grandfather Alexander Anderson which was published in NY in 1813 by Evert Duyckinck & from it I copied part of the record:
