American Hotel Allentown Pa Room 54 Nov 5, 1923 8:42 PM
I went to the court house this morning & worked in the registers office from 8:55 AM to 3:20 PM. See the seven pages preceding.
Chas F. Bartholomew, the register, who is hoping to be reelected tomorrow gave me the city & county directory to look over & the addresses on the two pages preceding were taken from it. He thought the Merkles at 8th & Chew St of the Merkle & Co store would be the best to see. He said their father was a soap mfr here in Allentown Pa. He recalled a David Merkle who is dead & a Jim Merkle an old man who died 25 yrs ago.
He said Dr Geo M. Romig who was up in his 70s lived at 1324 Hamilton St as did his brother John I. Romig who was blind & a musician.
Coming back to the Hotel, I called up Muhlenberg College abt 4 PM & they said Prof J.R. Merkel had left the college abt 15 yrs ago & was now living at Kingston Pa near Wilkes Barre where he was teaching & where I should go & see him.
I then walked up to 342 N 8th ST & a gray haired lady said she could tell nothing abt the Merkles but to go to the store up on the corner of 8th & Chew Sts
V10 Page 526
There, a pleasant elderly woman said that her father came to America abt 60 yrs ago from Stuttgart, Wittenberg, so that eliminates that large family viz Henry G., Hannah A. Mary H. Ellen F. Gustave A. & Wm John as not in our line.
I then walked to 815 Turner St & was told that Cora Rothermel had moved to 130 S 8th St.
I then walked to 625 Turner & while standing at the door Geo S. Markle Real Estate Agt drove up in an auto & asked me in. He said his father was Wm Markle from Shamokin Pa & that he had brothers George and Amandus S. & that his grandfather, Martin D. Markle died in Shamokin abt 15 yrs ago aged 71 yrs. He said he had come from Germany when he was a young man & he was sure that he had so emigrated so that eliminates item 33 p 334 & 42 pages 336 & 337.
I then walked around to court & 5th St expecting to find 502 E. Court but some residents there sd it was 5 squares away. I then walked to No 130 S 8th St & found Mrs Cora Rothermel all torn up just having moved in & she said to come back & see her son Roland R. who could tell about the family who came from Berks Co Pa.
I then walked around to 714 Union St where I found he lived upstairs
V10 Page 527
& the woman on the first floor said they were out but sd to come at 9 o'c in the morning. I then came to the hotel, got my dinner & took the street car out Hamilton to 13th St & was soon at:
Residence of John I. Romig & Dr Geo M. Romig No 1323 Hamilton Allentown Pa Nov 5, 1923 7:05 PM
I was admitted by Dr Geo M., a small homely man who immediately settled the matter in his own mind by saying they were not descended from John C. Romig & Mary Rothermel & saying that his father John Romig was born in 1804 but he fortunately asked me to sit down in the parlor until his blind brother in the room back who was talking to a caller came in. Dr then brought him in & introduced me to a wonderfully handsome man, immaculate in his dress, with a big head reminding you of a bishop, a smooth youthful appearing face without a wrinkle large frame but not tall & with a very attractive personality. They both thought that J.H. Romig No 223 N 10th St a tombstone marble cutter could tell me more that anyone else as he had given some attention to gathering such records. John I. said their grandfather's name was John as well as their father's & I doubt not that their great grandfather
V10 Page 528
was the John C. Romig who married Mary, the daughter of Leonard Rothermel & had twelve children as John I. said they were related in some way to the Rothermels & spoke of th effort many years ago to recover the Holland fortune & of his telling one of his Romig relatives that they wouldn't get more than 25 cts apiece as there were so many to divide it among. Telling him where I was from, he said that is near Blaine's old home. He said Blaine was his teacher for over a year when he, Blaine, returned from KY & taught in the blind school in Phila 1852 to 1854. He said his father had told him that his father (grandfather of my informant) had six brothers & six sisters which looks like the John C. Romig family who must have married a second wife & had one child as John I. sd a Mrs Newhart who lived here in the county was only a half sister of his grandfather which wd make of Mary Rothermel's children 7 boys & 5 girls. Asking him for the names of the brothers & sisters of his grandfather, he said he could give some & named the following:
Samuel Romig died in NY state
Peter Romig died at Whitehall this Co
Mrs Eschback lived up abt Milton Pa
Mrs Annie Windt husband Joseph? died in Allentown
Mrs Catherine Erdman lived & died in this Co
V10 Page 529
The above five & his grandfather John Romig were full brothers & sisters & Mr Romig remembers seeing them all but Samuel. He remembers Peter & John in their last illness when he was a boy & they were well advanced in years. He suggested that I see the Moravian records which he said like the Friends were very complete. He said Benj Romig was a Pa Moravian Bishop & was some sort of a cousin of his father. He says there is a Rev John Romig now in charge of the Moravian Church Phil Pa who he advises me to see. He said some of the family went west, but he did not know where. He said his full name was:
John Isaiah Romig born Jany 18, 1837
Just as I was leaving, a very charming handsome & stockily built old lady came from the back room & the doctor introduced her as his sister Mrs Hunt who in the course of our conversation said she was the eighteenth child of her mother who had nineteen children. She is the picture of health. I told her my grandmother was the youngest of 22 children of her father.
left at 7:50 PM
I then walked to No 29 S 11th St & Mrs Rothermel sd her husband was out & I arranged to go there at 8 o'c in the morning. I then walked to 130 S 8th & found Roland R. Rothermel had gone out to keep an appt with the doctor. Then came here:

Mr Jacks is a jovial heavy set pleasant man & says he is son of Thomas Jacks but he doesn't know the name of his father but says they used to spell it Jacques & his wife calls in, saying they were French Huguenots. he has a record on a slip of paper which he says he copied from his father's bible which is now in the hands of his brother in law John G. Spidle on Main St Hummelstown Pa in Dauphin Co whose deceased wife was Jane Lucinda Jacks. He says his brother Thomas Jacks lives near Mr Spidle in Hummelstown. Also his sister Sarah Buser (pro Boozer) at 2305 N 5th ST Harrisburg Pa widow living with her son Geo Bertram Buser born in 1842 can tell more about the family than anyone else. The record he took, shows that his father:
Thomas Jacks was born in 1818 & died Feby 18, 1896 at Hummelstown Pa & is buried there. he married Joanna DeWitt who died at Hummelstown Pa Mch 1, 1889 aged 71 yrs 3 mos & 4 days. He had a

The family moved fr Paxtang to Derry Church in 1858 & to Hummelstown in 1861.

Leaving 10:22 AM
Mrs Jack from just around a thin partition tried to dissuade her good natured sensible husband from giving me any data & when he didn't heed her injunction, she called out "Don't you give my birth to a stranger who comes without credentials. What business is our family records of his? I am not such a nut as to fall for that."
V10 Page 535
At residence of John Harvey Romig No 223 N Tenth St Allentown Pa Nov 6, 1923 1:11 PM
Mr Romig says his father was Augustus, his grandfather John & his great grandfather was John Christian Romig who married Mary Rothermel. He was son of Frederick whose father John Adam was the founder of the family in America. He says Wm H. Romig No 630 Camp St Harrisburg Pa has more Romig records than anyone else.
He says Charles R. Roberts now working in the P.O. here has valuable information on most old families having helped compile the Lehigh Co History. He lives at 520 N 6th St
He also says that Wm J. Dietrich who also helped compile the Lehigh Co Hist moved here from Reading & now lives here & he thinks it was he who prepared the Rothermel genealogical chart which he gave me to take along & copy & return along with other papers. He says Dietrich's wife has died. The Lehigh Co Hist 3d Vol gives a long article on the Romig family which shows that John I. Romig's great grandfather John Adam Romig was a bro of John Christian Romig both being sons of Frederick Romig & his wife Catharine Siegfried who he thinks may have been a sister of Mary the wife of my great great grandfather Jno Rothermel. W.J. Dietrich lives at 32 N 12th ST
Leaving 2:44 PM
V10 Page 536
At residence of Wm Joseph Dietrich No 32 N 12th ST Allentown Pa Nov 6, 1923 4:44 PM
Mr Dietrich says that Joel Dreibelbiss aged (born Dec 27, 1826) 97 still lives at Virginville Berks Co Pa with his son George, right below the town & are royal entertainers & excellent cooks. He has gotten out M.S. Montgomery 2 Vol Hist of Berks Co & in Vol 1 Page 496 is an article on the Driebelbiss family which he wrote himself & the correctness of which he vouches for. Mr D. says that the big Hist of Northumberland Co some of which he wrote treats of one branch of the Dreibelbiss family.
Joel Dreibelbiss is a great grandson of the pioneer John Jacob Dreibelbiss whose wife was a daughter of George Merkel. Jno Jacob emigrated in 1732 & died in 1761. His son Jacob was born in 1754 & died in 1831. His son Jacob was born 1785 & died 1857 & his son Joel above mentioned born Dec 27, 1826 is still living & I must go & see him.
Mr Dietrich's wife was Sarah Matilda Merkel. See page 882 & 883 on Vol 3 of Lehigh Co Hist. She was a great great granddaughter of Ludwig Merkel 1723 1808 buried at Trexlertown.
Mrs Donat aged 90 used to tell Mr D. that the Richmond Tp & the Macungie Tp Merkels used to visit
[margin note reads:] was Jacob Dreibelbiss born 1754 son of the original John Jacob who mar Magdalena Merkle see book 11 page 236 JVT May 2, 1924

each other every year. She was 88 when she told Mr D. She was wife of Aaron Donat & daughter of John Deitrich.
Mr Dietrich thinks he gave the genealogical chart of the Rothermel family to the Berks Co Historical Society in their own building on 5th St Reading.
Some of the families who settled in Richmond Tp were Jews viz Dreibelbiss, Wanner, Beaver, & one branch of the Merkel family
Mr D. thinks Mary Siegfried who married John Rothermel was a sister of Catherine who married Frederick Romig but refers me to Rev John Baer Stoudt who lives here at Allentown at NO 1054 Tilghman Street who wrote a book on Col John Siegfried & Rothermel live & which he says he has for sale & says I must see him before I leave.

I will now make record of today's work & transcribe as of the time of conferences such of my work as I penciled down at the time. From Mr Jacks, I walked up to Koch Bros big clothing store & a red headed girl said there was no Miss Daniels working there. I insisted there was & asked her to take me to the party who employed the help. She said it was the owner of the store who employed them & she called on the phone & was told she, Miss Daniel was employed in the work shop which she said was on the 3d floor on the far side of the first alley east. Going there it proved to be an alley in everything but name & it is N. Church St going upstairs through an unoccupied 2d floor room I found a lot of girls, women & men at work:
At Koch Bros Work Shop N. Church St 3d Floor Allentown Pa Nov 6, 1923 abt 11:20 AM
Asking for Miss Daniels they called a pleasant faced medium sized fine faced woman with a large goitre [sic] on her front neck who proved to be a good find by reason of her wonderful memory in giving dates for practically all of her family connections & I felt rewarded in persisting she was there. She told me that she

See book 17 page 1 to 4.
He thinks the historical Soc of Berks Co Pa wd have some data. Mr R. has a chart of the Siegfried family on which he says he worked & has made a chart as follows:
John Siegfried died abt 1748 married Elizabeth _____. His will dated 1747 might be recorded Phila Bucks or Berks Co as he died in what is now Berks Co then Phila as Berks was organized he thought in 1752.
Their children:

John Rothermel was sponsor for Peter.
This could not have been any other than John my gggf & Peter the father was evidently his elder brother as there was then no other Peter old enough to be a father.
