Urdu Literature I – SS 124

Autumn 2004-2005

(September 6 – November 26, 2004)

Number of Units: 4 Duration: 10 weeks

Number of Lectures: 20 Class Time: 100 Minutes each

I. Course Description

This course is intended for the students interested in the study of literature. Focusing on the Urdu short story, it follows the course of development from oral tradition in its ancient origins in folktale and legend to the present form of modern short story. It aspires to enable the learners to enjoy, appreciate and relate to the ethos of Urdu short story. To understand the complexity and diversity of relations in the context of age, class and gender. This course will follow the evolution of Urdu short story thought different phases. The development of genre in relation to under currents of time will be the main theme. It will use original Urdu sources to focus on literary expression of our experiences in life.


II. Goals

  • Familiarising the students with the basic themes in Urdu short story;




  • Facilitating the students in understanding and appreciating the literary idiom and recognising different types of literary expression;




  • Enabling the students to understand the intellectual, social and cultural perspective of Urdu short story.

III. Grade Distribution

Participation 5%

Seminar 15%

Assignments 20%

Mid Term Examination 25%

Final Examination 35%


Participation will mean both attendance and involvement. Seminar will be based on the written critique prepared by the students and presented in an open house discussion after each Module/Unit. Students are expected to give three Assignments during the quarter. Two with the highest grade will count towards the final grade.


IV. Pre-Requisites




  • Fluency in reading Urdu;




  • Some exposure to basic Urdu literary genres;


V. Outline

The foundation theme of the course will be growth of genre in the context of social and cultural experiences. It will comprise of three modules.
