Course Description

This course is designed to familiarize the students with the modern South Asian Literature in Urdu. It will comprise of prose---fiction and non-fiction--originally written in Urdu. This course endeavours to identify areas of convergence and divergence in a creative experience. This diversified literature reflects values, mental make up, and intellectual dimensions in a complex cultural tradition. These cross-cultural writings are effective ambassadors of appreciating and understanding sensitivities and feelings.

This course desires to expand and refine the minds, and to quicken the sense of life, through understanding the creative and imaginative expression.

Goals

   Facilitating the students in understanding and appreciating literature in its diversity.

   Enabling the student to enjoy the intellectual dimensions of expression.

   Empowering the students in appreciating the cultural context of literary idiom.

Participation will mean both attendance and involvement. Seminar will be based on the written critique prepared by the students and presented in an open house discussion after each Module. Students are expected to give two Assignments during the quarter.

   Fluency in reading Urdu.
   

Outline

The foundation theme of the course will be Diversity in Literary Statement of Reality. In addition evolution of Urdu literary idiom and socio-political ambience will be cross cutting themes. The selections include short stories, essays and humour. The course will comprise of 2 Modules.
