Use the past continuous tense to talk about an action that was happening at a past time.

Use the past continuous tense to talk about what was happening when another action took place.

Use the past tense to express a short action that happens in the middle of the progressive action.
Language forms:

Wh-questions, e.g. What were you doing at 8:00 am this morning? Who was talking when the teacher came in?

Yes/ No questions, e.g. Was he having his lunch when you arrived? No, he wasn’t. He was listening to music when I arrived.

Use the past continuous tense to talk about what was happening when another action took place and the past tense to express a short action that happens in the middle of the progressive action, e.g. I was watching television when you phoned me.
