ABOUT THE BOOK: This book – which was sold in a major US deal to S&S - is based on the life-changing lessons taught by a charismatic Harvard professor Professor Michael Puett in the university’s third most popular course – surprisingly a course on ancient Chinese philosophy. Delving into the texts of philosophers who lived thousands of years ago, Professor Puett guides his students through eastern teachings that remain applicable today, helping them to reconsider their cultural assumptions about ambition, power, happiness, creativity, planning, and relationships, and allowing them to see new approaches to daily life.

THE PATH distills the lessons of Puett’s revolutionary Harvard course, helping readers everywhere apply these ideas to their everyday lives. Using the lessons of six Chinese philosophers, Puett shows how subtle shifts in how you think and how you attend to your life have grand repercussions. THE PATH is everything western thought is not: it advocates self-discovery through looking outward, not inward; it says power and influence are gained through passivity, not dominance; it demonstrates that the overall quality of your relationships are largely determined by small gestures; that spontaneity only can be found through training; and that you can do whatever it is you wish to do, no matter your inherent skills.

Michael Puett is the Walter C. Klein Professor of Chinese History in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Chair of the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University. He is the author of several books and in 2013 was awarded a Harvard College Professorship for excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Christine Gross-Loh is an author and journalist, whose writing has appeared in a number of publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Atlantic Online and the Huffington Post. Her book Parenting Without Borders was published by Avery in 2013. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University in East Asian history.
THE BUDDHA PILL: Can Meditation Change You? by Dr Miguel Farias and Catherine Wikholmhttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/i/41shn9xnldl.jpg

AGENT: Caroline Hardman, Hardman & Swainson

PUBLISHER: UK – Watkins Publishing

RIGHTS SOLD: Portuguese – Lua de Papel

ABOUT THE BOOK: Millions of people meditate daily but can meditative practices really make us better people?

In The Buddha Pill, pioneering psychologists Dr Miguel Farias and Catherine Wikholm put meditation and mindfulness under the microscope. Separating fact from fiction, they reveal what scientific research including their groundbreaking study on yoga and meditation with prisoners tells us about the benefits and limitations of these techniques for improving our lives. As well as illuminating the potential, the authors argue that these practices may have unexpected consequences, and that peace and happiness may not always be the end result.

Offering a compelling examination of research on transcendental meditation to recent brain-imaging studies on the effects of mindfulness and yoga, and with fascinating contributions from spiritual teachers and therapists, Farias and Wikholm weave together a unique story about the science and the delusions of personal change.

SCIENCE
I, SUPERORGANISM: Learning to Love Your Inner Ecosystem by Jon Turneyhttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/i/41c2yczu6hl.jpg

PUBLISHER: UK - Icon Books

PUBL. DATE: March 2015

ABOUT THE BOOK: A cutting edge dispatch from human science, revealing that we are all veritable walking Noah’s Arks of micro-species: the first book-length account of this new realm of human biology.

Every human body carries a secret cargo: a huge population of micro-organisms that lives in your mouth and nose, on your skin, in your guts. This is the human microbiome, and it has in the last few years become biologists' most thrilling research interest. Vastly outnumbering human cells, our invisible passengers are vital to life. They help us digest food, make essential nutrients, and combat disease. They help regulate allergies and inflammation via the immune system. They influence bowel disease, heart disease and cancer. They may even have a role in developing behaviour. We are not just isolated humans, but superorganisms. And that calls into question our obsession with disinfection and sterilisation, and our antibiotic addiction, which is like managing a complex ecosystem with napalm. Acclaimed science communicator and editor Jon Turney presents the first book-length account of a new realm of human biology that will make you think again about this machine we call ourselves.

I, SUPEROGRANISM is an essential primer for the decades ahead, in which we will learn to look after our bacteria, instead of ignoring or exterminating them.

JUNK DNA: A Journey through the Dark Matter of the Genome by Nessa Careyhttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/i/513htwtlnzl.jpg

AGENT: Andrew Lownie Literary Agency

PUBLISHER(S): US - Colombia, UK - Icon

RIGHTS SOLD: Russian – BKL, Spanish - Ediciones de Intervencion Cultural SL

PUBL. DATE: March 2015

ABOUT THE BOOK: Ever since the completion of the human genome over a decade ago, scientists have been struggling to understand some of its counter-intuitive findings. One of these was the realisation that humans contain pretty much the same number of genes as a tiny and simple worm. The genes are not only similar in number between the two species, but encode very similar proteins. Another astonishing discovery is that around 98% of the human genome doesn’t code for proteins at all. So why do humans contain so much of this type of DNA, which until very recently had been dismissed as “junk”?

JUNK explores the exciting new developments in our understanding of human DNA. It lays out the latest science that shows how the so-called junk DNA is in reality highly functional, but operates in a completely different way from the traditional genes. This previously neglected 98% of our genome may hold the answers to a remarkable range of questions, from the reasons why humans are so complex, to the mechanisms of ageing, and even new ways to treat devastating human diseases.

Nessa Carey has a PhD in virology from the University of Edinburgh and has had successful careers in both the university and commercial settings. She was a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine in London, and for ten years has worked in the biotech industry, trying to take basic science discoveries and turn them into new treatments for human diseases. Over the last four years she has been working with some of the world’s leading scientists in the exciting new field of epigenetics, and her book The Epigenetics Revolution was critically acclaimed study of the subject.

THE SOUL FALLACY: What Science Shows We Gain from Letting Go of Our Soul Beliefs by Julien Musolino

AGENT: Hardman & Swainsonhttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/i/51pmyipkipl.jpg

PUBLISHER(S): US - Prometheus Books

PUBL. DATE: January 2015

ABOUT THE BOOK: How is a seemingly faith based subject such as the soul even subject to scientific analysis? Dr. Musolino first sets out to demonstrate how the existence of the soul is indeed a scientific claim. With that fact firmly established he proceeds to take the reader on a lively, accessible journey through neuroscience, psychology, history, physics, and philosophy, among other subjects, to establish the evidence supporting the conclusion that soul is a fallacy. But if the belief in the soul is archaic and unfounded, why do so many of us cling to the notion? Musolino looks at the origin of soul beliefs, and the psychology behind our desire to have a soul. He takes it one step further, showing how letting go of soul belief helps us live more meaningful lives and allows us to make more informed policy decisions.

In the tradition of Sam Harris' The End of Faith and Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, THE SOUL FALLACY uses the empirical knowledge of its scientist-author to illuminate the speculative, irrational nature of certain human beliefs. There is tremendous fear that if we let go of our soul, we stand to lose libertarian free will, immortality, and our morality, but, as Musolino argues, we need not be afraid; in fact, our lives and our society are better off when we shed our soul beliefs.

Julien Musolino is a researcher at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, where he is the director of the Psycholinguistics Laboratory and holds a dual appointment in the Psychology Department and the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science (RUCCS).
