LIVINGSTON – Funeral services for Laura T. Turner, 73, of Livingston were held Monday, July 30, 1984 from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Orval Barger officiated and interment followed in Bold Springs Cemetery. Mrs. Turner died Saturday, July 28, in Livingston Memorial Hospital. She was born July 12, 1911 in Grayburg, Texas, the daughter of Peter Lee and Francis Tillou Turner McGowan. Mrs. Turner was a very
active member of the Friendship Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church. She was also an avid 42 player, having participated in many of the Folk life Festival Tournaments. Mrs. Turner had babysat for many of the area children over the years and had become affectionately known as “Granny Turner”. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Leroy Ladish of Kingwood and Jack and Margaret Tyler of Livingston; one sister,
Willie B. Watts of Livingston; five grand daughters, Kim Ladish of Houston, Sheri O’Neill and Angela O’Neill of Livingston, Debra Tyler of Academy, Texas, and Laura Fay Turner of Houston; two grand sons, Greg Turner and Bart Turner, both of Houston, one daughter-in-law, Jeannette Turner of Houston; four great grandsons and many other relations and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Turner and by her only son, J. B. Turner. Pallbearers were Ben Cockrell, Wallace Turner, Jasper Wilkerson, Fred P. Martin Jr., Hal Loving and Roland Wilder. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Pinckard, Cliff Pinckard, A. T. Watts, Brodie Jones, Joe McKinnon, H. B. “Boots” McKinnon, Joe Camp and Jerry Bloomfield. Cochran Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Maggie Bell Turner, 87, of Port Arthur, died Sunday at Crest Haven Nursing Home.
She was a native of Montgomery County and a resident of Port Arthur for 63 years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves with the Rev. H. R. Stinson officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bold Springs Cemetery in Livingston. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

LIVINGSTON - Funeral services for Captain Jens Tweekrem, 94, were held Saturday, March 9, 2002, from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Sharon Kapsch officiating. Interment followed in Bold Spring Cemetery. Mr. Tweekrem died Wednesday, March 6, at his residence in Onalaska. He was born April 9, 1907 in Christiansan, Norway, the oldest of 10 children of Ole and Tora Burvik Tweekrem. His family were farmers, but he took to
the sea at about age 16. He came to the United States, working up and down the Hudson River. During this time, he put himself through school to obtain licenses to operate ocean going vessels. At age 28 he obtained a master's (captain's) license to command vessels for any seas and any tonnage. In 1939 he applied for commission in the U.S. Navy, which took a couple of years since he still had relatives in occupied Norway. He was commissioned commander and served during World War II, participating on convoys bringing needed
supplies to support the war effort. He served about 35 years on the seas. Leaving the sea, he served some 20 years as port captain/superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife of more than 70 years, Adelaide; son, Paul K. Tweekrem of Maryesther, Fla.; grandsons, Paul K. Tweekrem of Tucson, Ariz., John Tweekrem of Port Neches and Brian Tweekrem of Pasadena; great-granddaughters, Brandy Tweekrem, Tiffany Veasea, Kaiann Tweekrem, Tara Tweekrem, Paige Tweekrem, Brittney Tweekrem and Kourtney Tweekrem; great-grandson, Tyler Tweekrem; great-great-grandson, Dominick Veasea; and sister, Olga Arneson.
