Obituary published in the Polk County Enterprise – April 23, 1987 Edition
LIVINGSTON – Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Ella Meece Wainwright, 88, were held Saturday, April 18, 1987 from the Bethel Baptist Church in Bold Springs, with the Rev. Ricky Ricks and the Rev. Frank Hood officiating. Interment followed in Bold Springs Cemetery. Mrs. Wainwright died Thursday, April 16 in Nacogdoches after a lengthy illness. She was born July 28, 1898 in the Bold Springs community to Monroe Dawson Meece and Daniel Albania (Allie) Baggett Meece. Mrs. Wainwright attended school through the eighth grade in the Bold Springs School. She worked in her early years as a druggist’s helper in Onalaska and as a cashier in New Willard for the Texas Long Leaf Lumber Co. Mrs. Wainwright joined Bethel Baptist Church in Bold Springs at an early age. On March 25, 1922 she married the late Clyde S. Wainwright Sr. and to this marriage two children were born. After their marriage, she and her husband joined the Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church in New Willard. Mrs. Wainwright served her church faithfully, assuming leadership responsibilities in the Women’s Auxillary, Christian Endeavor and as the Sunday school secretary for many years. She visited the sick and spent time with the families of those who died sometimes helping with the burial preparations. In her early years of marriage, she helped her husband by rounding up cattle on cattle drives. She was responsible for making the sausage and smoking the bacon from the hogs her husband butchered, as well as raising the main part of their garden which furnished most of their food in the 30’s and 40’s. Mrs. Wainwright was also an active member of her community, participating in organizations such as the Parent-Teacher Association and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Wainwright traveled many miles in the 1930’s over the rural dirt roads of Polk County, with her two children in the back seat of her car, recruiting persons to sign up for rural electricity with the REA. After all of her hard work, her husband was appointed to the Board of Directors, serving in that capacity for the next 40 years. Mrs. Wainwright was recognized for her “far-sighted pioneering” in 1965 by the Texas Electric Cooperatives, Inc. for all of her hard work. Everyone loved this caring woman and looked forward to the New Willard homecoming each year when they could eat her chicken and dressing and her dumplings. Mr. Wainwright preceded her in death in 1982. She is survived by her two children, Clyde S. Wainwright Jr. of Houston and Patsy Ruth Parrish of New Willard; her sister, Ruby Rasberry of Houston; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and by many other relatives and dear friends. Pallbearers were Charles Truett Parrish Jr., Michael Shaw Parrish, Clyde Shelby Wainwright III, Dawson Courtney, James Courtney, Wiley Eugene Eckols, Stephen Randall Whitbeck and Cliff Mosher.
