Subject of message: The Infamous Tony Blair
Hi, my name is Andrew and I played Tony Blair with my partner Dan. I’m a senior at Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio. In real life, I am a jazz aficionado. I play lead trumpet in CYJO (the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra) – a nationally renowned youth jazz group. In addition, I am the founding president of the Jazz Arts Group’s (a local organization promoting jazz that funds CYJO) Teen Board. I also play Solo Eb Soprano Cornet in two local brass bands. In school, I participate in the marching, pep, jazz, and symphonic bands. Outside of music, I am a co_leader in Teen_Institute (an anti_drug group), captain of our quiz team, a member of the drama club (we are currently presenting the Sound of Music – I’m playing Max), and am actively involved in my church. I am a huge history buff. I love history, which explains why I’m crazy enough to be a Civil War reenactor. I reenact with the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A. It’s a great hobby – I love it. It’s basically going out camping and blowing stuff up – you can’t complain about that!
Given my interests, I think it’s fairly obvious that I’m planning on going on with music and history – my two passions in life. I will be attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio next year. There, I will be triple majoring in Music Education, Music Performance – Trumpet, and History Education.
My ambition is to be a recording musician. I realize that this probably won’t happen, so my back_up plan is to teach history – which is fine with me!
As far as dreams are concerned, I would definitely like to have a family and children someday, and live a comfortable life. But hey, isn’t that what everyone wants?

Hello,
My name is Ron, and I commonly go by the alias of Jobe. This came from my favorite playing card, the jack of spades. The other name for the card is the one eyed black jack. If you take the initials from this, (oebj), and shuffle them you will get the name Jobe. I am a senior at Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio. In the simulation, my role was Condoleezza Rice. Unlike most students on my team, I did not have a partner helping me play the part of United States Secretary of State.. I am an artist at heart, and plan to go to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I plan to major in Graphic Design, but that could change. As I go on with life, I usually just expect to take life with the curves it throws. I plan to continue after college and get a job in an art field of some kind. I am still debating about becoming an art teacher. I enjoyed talking with you all and wish you all the best for your lives.

In Germany I am going to have 2 more years of school at the Voktoria_Luise Gymnasium ( Gymnasium is in Germany a kind of school. It can be referred to your high school ) in Hameln. In this simulation I played the role of Jacques Chirac, President of France. The experience of spending one year abroad is really recommendable. Additional to my interest in triathlon, which I train for a lot, I love to practice the drums and traveling around with friends. In Germany I like to spend evening with friends in Pubs, playing pool, cards and talking. After graduating from school in Germany, I plan to work one year in Paris as a social worker. After this I plan to go to the University of Freiburg ( I do not plan to go to college/university in the USA, because going to college/university is much cheaper ) and studying something with social science.

In this simulation, I, Rosanna, played the role of Jack Straw with my partner Sami. Throughout this simulation the most important thing I learned personally was how the whole conflict began. I never knew it was three different religions fighting over the sacred land. I was fascinated when I was taught that each religious head stepped foot in the same place as the other religions. The countries profile and background of the character were the parts of the simulation that helped me understand the current situation in the real world. It helped me understand where they stand on the Middle East conflict. The one thing I still find difficult to understand about the current conflicts in the Middle East understands who is controlling the Gaza Strip and what part of it.

Hi, my name is Alex and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman High School in Ohio. My friend Bill and I played the role of Farouk Sharaa. I feel that I learned many things from this simulation. I became familiar with how different countries communicate with one another. This part of the simulation was probably the most interesting. I also learned how countries form agreements or treaties. The fact that we were participating in a situation that is taking place in the world today helped me to learn more about the Middle Eastern Conflict. I felt that I understood most of the current conflicts in the Middle East.

Hey this is Brendan and I played Donald Rumsfeld with my partner, Amber. I think that I learned quite a bit about the situation in this simulation. One thing I have realized is that communication is slow. Sometimes I would get bogged down with things that I needed to reply to and other times I would be waiting on replies and wondering what was going to happen. I think it also helped my understanding of the real world situation because there are so many different opinions and desires involved in the region that it is difficult to reach a mutual agreement. Ideas that I felt would help were often contained flaws that I could not see because of my perspective and I think that this simulation helped me realize that. I know that there are still many difficulties in this conflict, but I think that this simulation really helped me understand some of them.

Hi, my name is Bill and I go to Dublin Coffman High School. My partner for this simulation was Alex. Learning from a personal experience that the simulation was very helpful. Being able to communicate with people that you don't know who you're talking too. The parts of the simulation that can help me understand the real world would be how a peace plan has got to be drawn up and how much time it takes to make it perfect and go in effect. The things I still find hard to understand is why there is so much talking to so many people and how long it takes to get things done between so many people.

Hello, my name is Amber. I’m a senior at Dublin Coffman high school. During the simulation I played Michel Barnier, France’s Foreign Minister.
I believe that the most important thing I learned in the simulation is how difficult it is for one to maintain a neutral position. Often, many conflicts that were presented to France put us in a position where we needed to make a firm stance. That stance, however, could result in France displaying a preference of one country over another. I think that being able to effectively maintain a neutral position made it much easier for the country to deal with Israel and Palestine. As Michel Barnier, I was very happy to know how good our relations were with Palestine. Initially, I suspected that we would encounter many conflicts with them, however they proved to be very cooperative.
I feel that the simulation helped me understand the current situation in the Middle East because I was able to understand the fact that all the countries involved have very many demands and are quite impatient in having them fulfilled.
However, I think that the current situation in the Middle East did not parallel the simulation very well because there is so much history and emotion involved in it, that there is no way the simulation or the student acting in it, could parallel the situation.

Hello, my name is Holly and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman high school. I played the role of Michel Barnier with my partner, Amber.
Most importantly, I learned how the conflicts in the Middle East affect many nations across the globe and not just Palestine and Israel. Politically, I learned how hard it is to communicate effectively and efficiently, so that the peace process can progress. Academically, I learned the steps in the Road Map Plan, the Quartet members and the names of various world leaders.
The communiqués helped me to better understand the current situation in the modern world. Through the use of the communiqués, various actions and plans would be proposed in hopes of moving forward. Yet, some countries would either not respond or not respond in the appropriate way. Then, the peace process did not progress and we felt like we weren’t getting anything accomplished. This was rather frustrating. Also, the press releases helped me to learn about the opinions and platforms of many of the world leaders. I still find it difficult to understand all the reasons behind why the conflict has lasted for so many years and has yet to be resolved.

I am Eddie and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman High School and I played Bashar al_Asad with my partner, Kristen. The most important thing I learned in this simulation is that logic does not work. Looking from the outside of this conflict it seems so easy to understand and solve. When in the simulation I quickly learned that the conflict is not as simple as it seems. Each country has their own agendas, which can be quite selfish and lead to extreme difficulties in solving the problem. It helped me learn how to interact with people, especially when it comes to compromise. The simulation also helped me learn how to take control. I felt that nothing was really happening in the simulation, so since I was Arab I decided to take charge. My attempts at creating and heading an Arab alliance utilized my compromise skills, attempting to use logic to please Syria and everyone and lead a movement to end the conflict.

Hello! My name is Rachel and I am a senior from Dublin Coffman High School. I played Abdul Halim Khadam from Syria along with my partner, Liz. When I came into the simulation I immediately thought I was going to accomplish all my goals and achieve a peaceful plan by the end. In the beginning of this simulation I knew almost nothing about the Arab_Israeli conflict. What I did know about the conflict I learned from news clippings. When I would see pictures of terrorist bombings against Israel I would immediately take Israel’s side. I think that the biggest thing I have learned from this simulation is that I shouldn’t have been so biased towards Israel in the beginning. Before I just didn’t understand why the two groups could not stop fighting and be peaceful. Achieving peace is something that almost seems unreachable especially after doing this simulation. I have learned and started understanding each side of the conflict and understand why both are fighting. I have also changed my views on terrorist activity. I can understand why Arab countries have resorted to terrorism. The Arabs have wanted some sort of what they consider their Holy Lands. Even after this simulation I have a hard time thinking of a fair solution to the Arab_Israeli conflict. I hope that one day that peace can be achieved but as I learned in the simulation its hard to come by.

Hey, I am Amber and I played Donald Rumsfeld along with Brendan. I learned that solving this issue is a lot harder than it looks. When my partner and I tried to give advice or get information, it took a while to get a response from some people/countries, or some countries did not even want to take our advice. This made communication very slow, and difficult. The simulation helped me realize what exactly the countries are fighting about, and what their thoughts are on different issues that arose throughout the simulation. I still do not understand why some of the countries are not willing to give a little in order to create peace.

Hello, my name is Kevin D and I played George W. Bush with my partner Kevin H. While participating in the simulation I learned that getting people with completely different viewpoints to communicate, let alone agree with, issues that will effect both sides. The slower progress than I expected helped me understand why it always seems like little to no progress is made in the real situation. Lines of communication can be extremely slow and even if one side agrees upon an idea, the process must be put on halt until all involved sides agree. Despite this, I still do not understand why Israel and Palestine are hesitant to get together and share their grievances with each other. It seems to me that if both sides were just honest with each other, it would allow the peace process to proceed much faster.

Hello! My name is Liz and I am from Dublin Coffman High School. I played the role of Abdul Halim Khadam along with my partner, Rachel. In this simulation, I learned a lot about the conflict from the political aspect. I walked into this class knowing that there was a war being fought but I did not know much about the history of it. I learned a lot about the conflict over who has the right to the lands and the difference of religious background. Being Catholic I am aware of the history the Jewish community has with Jerusalem, but I was unaware of the ties that the Muslim community has to Jerusalem. The part of this simulation that helped me understand the current situation in the real world was talking to characters with opposing views. It was hard get someone who thought I was in the wrong to see what I felt was right. It helped me understand why resolutions are not easy to come by and why it takes a lot more than just giving your word on something to make it work.

Although there were difficulties, I feel as though I learned a lot about what to say to people and how to say it. Academically, I learned what problems have been facing the Middle East, and why no solution ever works. Being able to communicate with other people, and seeing how they acted and reacted to what I had to say really helped me understand why some things work and others do not. For something being difficult to understand, I’m going to have to go with the cliché little kid response of “why can’t we all just along?”

Bonjour, my name is Leah, I am a senior at Dublin Coffman High. My best friend Lisa and I played the role of Jean_Pierre Raffarin, the Prime Minister of France. I learned many important things through this simulation. Personally, I now see why the Arab/Israeli Conflict is so hard to solve, before I never understood why it hadn’t been resolved yet, but being in an authoritative position I see how truly difficult it is. Neither country wants to make the first move, the Syrians and Hamas are impossible to control and are always setting back progress through violence. Academically, I learned about the world’s leaders, alliances that exist, and a lot about the countries in Europe and the Middle East. Politically, I now realize that it is hard to make progress where both nations deserve the same land and can not live together. It was also interesting interacting with the different countries leaders, it was actually quite difficult, over time I learned better strategies and communicated with more ease. However, I still have a difficult time understanding why intense action hasn’t been taken. France and the USA’s alliances should join together to move both nations out of the area to discontinue it all, no one gets the land. That reminds me of the Bible story that talks about two men fighting over one woman. In it, it is says the woman's hand should be cut off, so that she may not be able to please either of them.

Within this simulation, I made many different in_character decisions, most of which were not contrary to my personal beliefs. I was lucky enough to have a character from a country that made decisions that I would have made as well. There was only a few decisions where I disagreed, but that is what makes up the game. I coped with the discomfort by just playing the game as I normally would and I wouldn’t worry about it. I gained a Syrian perspective on issues in the Middle East.

I did not feel that any of these decisions went against my beliefs because the character that I played was a government leader in my country. Sometimes I held back comments that I wanted to make because I felt that they would not be in character but these instances were rare and I did not gain any discomfort from them.

Hello, my name is Eddie and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman High School. I played Bashar al_Asad in this simulation. Making decisions as the President of Syria was extremely different that any normal decisions I would normally make. I would decide on one thing and realize that the decision was nothing like what the normal Syrian President would do. I coped by rethinking the decisions and trying to make them more truly Syrian, even though in all honesty I still took a lot of actions that President Asad most likely would never take. It helped me understand why politics take so long, countries want different things and have different means of doing it. When countries do things their way and do not think about others only shows how important compromise really is. This is how many people avoid fights everyday and how countries would be able to avoid conflict and even war.

In Germany I am going to have 2 more years of school at the Voktoria_Luise Gymnasium ( Gymnasium is in Germany a kind of school. It can be referred to your high school ) in Hameln. Before the simulation I was very interested in politics and with getting scholarship by the German and American government I started trying to learn more about politics on various issues from different perspectives. Representing Jacques Chirac, President of France, was interesting and experiencing mission. It made me understand the pressure of the leaders who are responsible for the peace process in the Middle East. Personally, I had no problem representing the interests of my character. The experience I got out of this simulation would be the knowledge about the actions in the middle east. the involved countries, religions and steps which it take to reach a peaceful solution. All in all I got interested about learning more abou the Middle East and respecting the work of the Cabinet, expressed in the Road Map plan and fair elections for the Palestinians.

It was very interesting playing the role and character of Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal. I think that for the most part, Khaled Meshaal would have been one of the easier characters to represent take actions for. It was very easy for me to make realistic decisions. This is mainly due to the fact that in real life, all that Khaled Meshaal and the Palestinian Resistence does is bomb Israelis, not cooperate, and most importantly NOT make peace. These things are exactly what we tried to do and I believe that we were very successful in doing so.

Hi, my name is Andrew, from Dublin Coffman, and I played Tony Blair with my partner, Dan. If I compare and contrast Tony Blair to myself I don’t find many differences. We are both moral individuals and both of us are also somewhat conservative. I differ in that I am quite liberal minded. We have similar beliefs, with the exception that I don’t particularly agree with Blair’s unquestioned support of the U.S. For Blair’s sake, I think he should worry about his country and their status among the international community rather than appeasing America. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big Tony Blair fan, I think he is one of the finest world leaders, but Britain cannot be taken seriously if they are going to be America’s lapdog. So, against my better judgment I told the American’s at the onset of the game that I would support them in any way. It turned out all right though, because I never heard from America past the first week or two. Care to explain W.?

Hello, my name is Rosanna and I shared the role of Jack Straw with my partner, Sami. From the start of this simulation, my beliefs were similar to Great Britain. Therefore, in the end it was not a difficult decision in choosing our character, Jack Straw. Playing the character of Jack Straw, I gained experience because if I did not know something, it pushed me to research it and made me capable of responding to a message knowing what to say.

My name is Sami and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman. Many of the decisions I made were not contrary to my personal beliefs. I consider myself fairly liberal because of the fact that I do not believe that my personal beliefs should be imposed on other people, especially by the government. Playing the role of conservative Jack Straw was not difficult because the game did not call for decisions on social issues. The most insight I gained was how government officials work together on a project.

Subject of message: Michel Barnier...What did I learn
Hello, my name is Amber. I’m a senior at Dublin Coffman high school. During the simulation I played Michel Barnier, France’s Foreign Minister.
As France, our plan to solve the Middle East conflict was outlined in President Bush’s Roadmap plan. I felt that the plan was very fair to both Palestine and Israel, thus I never had any situations where conflicts were contrary to personal beliefs.
One situation, however, that did counter my beliefs was when Egypt demanded France to aid them in acquiring lands for Palestine. They felt that due to previous historical conflicts, we were required to aid them. However, France felt that they are not obligated to fulfill such a request. We were also unwilling to force Israel to hand over large amounts of land. When we voiced our opinions of this to Egypt, they immediately responded. They’re belief was that one should immediately attempt to return land to Palestine in order to bring peace. They said that the only way that we could actually calm the terrorists and at the same time aid in the development of a Palestinian state, was to give land. This way, Palestine would be able to improve their economy, and begin the construction of vital institutions.
When we spoke to Egypt, we were at first hesitant to be so direct and somewhat aggressive in the response. However, I feel that by displaying such strengths, we were capable of displaying the fact that France was not a country to be pushed around. It also showed that we did have confidence and were willing to stand up for what we believed in, despite it being incorrect.
I feel that through out this conflict, France gained much as a country. The knowledge that Egypt imparted to us opened our eyes to the importance of getting land quickly to Palestine. Also, I feel that our relations with Egypt somewhat improved. We agreed in aiding them with acquiring land for Palestine. But we in no way felt that we were obligated to do it for Egypt. The best outcome of this situation though, was a greater understanding of the Palestinian situation, thus motivating us to pressure Israel to give up land.

Hello, my name is Kevin D and I played George W. Bush with my partner Kevin H. As far as decisions I had to make, I never really had any decisions that conflicted with my personal beliefs. There were decisions that we made that I did not necessarily agree with, but I did not agree with them mainly because of actions that occurred during the game. I’m not sure if this is because I am from the country I role_played or if we truly were not faced with any decisions that were against my beliefs. As a result of this, I think I might have lost an opportunity to make decisions against my beliefs that would have been present if I had played a different character.

Hi, my name is Amber and I played Donald Rumsfeld along with my partner, Brendan. Since I played the role of The Secretary of Defense of The United States, many of the decisions that I had to make were within my beliefs. I did not have any discomfort during the entire simulation. I was glad to see that the United States had basically the same beliefs as me throughout the simulation.

Hello, My name is Holly and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman high school. I played the role of Michel Barnier with my partner, Amber. I found it difficult and at times awkward to make decisions that were contrary to my personal beliefs. I did not believe that France should aid Egypt in persuading Israel to surrender land due to previous historical conflicts. Egypt believed that France should do most of the work in getting Israel to surrender land. I thought that France could aid Egypt, but that Egypt should do the majority of the negotiating. Through this period of communication, I tried to remember that I had to make decisions that would accurately represent France in the simulation. I would rather make decisions in the simulation with which I did not personally agree then to inaccurately represent France. I reminded myself of this fact and it helped me to cope with the discomfort. From the experience, I gained efficient communication abilities and new perspectives on various country platforms in regards to the conflict. Also, I gained insight on the way that France runs their government policies and how they act upon and make decisions.

Hello! My name is Liz and I am a senior at Dublin Coffman High School. I played the role of Vice President of Syria Abdul Halim Khadam along with my partner, Rachel. I cannot really say that I made decisions against my personal beliefs. My personal beliefs connect to both sides of the conflict. I understand the Jewish community’s ties with Jerusalem and the lands that they currently govern, but I also think UN Resolution 242 should be followed. The Arab community is fighting for what is theirs, as the “freedom fighters” did in the American Revolution. During this simulation I worked towards peace in nonviolent ways. I didn’t come across any discomfort other than when countries accused us personally for terrorist attacks. That was frustrating. I gained a lot of knowledge about the conflicts in the Middle East in this simulation. I also learned how to carefully word communiqués not to bind the words to the action being taken, and how to tell people what they want to hear.

Hi, my name is Bill and I’m a senior at Dublin Coffman High School and my partner for this simulation was Alex. Making decisions in_character is very different because you have to think about the country that you are and what your country believes in. I didn’t really have to cope with discomfort because I played my role to the best of my ability, with no hard feelings. I did gain speaking to others as a greater experience and being able to establish a relationship with other countries.

My name is Kristen and I played Bashar al_Asad, President of Syria, with my partner, Eduardo. I’m a senior at Dublin Coffman High School in Ohio. In the simulation my character and I were both for making peace in the Middle East and we both were against terrorism. Syria used to be viewed as a terrorist country but my partners and I decided to make Syria against terrorism in this simulation in order to make alliances and to make peace easier. I bet Bashar al_Asad in real life wouldn’t have made some of the decisions that we made. I gained the ability to research about different people and countries and make decisions based on what the research says about the person’s personality. I dealt with the discomfort of making in_character decisions by just trying to put myself in Bashar al_Asad’s shoes and try to make decisions on what I thought he would do in real life.
