Ziyārat of Imām ʿAlī ibne Mūsā al-Riḍā

Ziyārat of Imām ʿAlī ibne Mūsā al-Riḍā

The Ziyārat of the Seven Traditions

Translated by Saleem Bhimji

The visitation (ziyārat) of the Seven Traditions is one of the visitation rites of Imām al-Riḍā, peace with him, which has been related in the book Ṣaḥīfatul Riḍawiyyah compiled by ʿAllamāh Sayyid Murtaḍā Mujtahidī Sīstānī.

This ziyārat has been mentioned in the addendum to the (famous) book of supplications, al-Mibāḥ of al-Kafamī, may God shower His mercy upon him, in the following manner.

After performing the ghusl for the ziyārat (of Imām al-Riḍā, peace with him) and following all of the mannerisms of the performance of the ziyārat, turn towards Imām al-Riḍā, peace with him, with your back to the qiblah, and after making your intention (niyyah), recite his ziyārat in the follow manner.

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

I bear witness that there is god except for Allāh – the One who has no partners;

And I bear witness that indeed Muḥammad is His slave and His Messenger;

And I bear witness that indeed ʿAlī is His friend and the [immediate] successor to His messenger [Muḥammad].

O Allāh! Send Your prayers upon Muḥammad the family of Muḥammad.

O Allāh! Send Your prayers upon the angels of close proximity (to You),

O Allāh! Send Your prayers upon the [previous] prophets and [previous] messengers,

O Allāh! Send Your prayers upon the infallible leaders (Imāms),

O Allāh! Send Your prayers upon our master and the one whom we follow, the leader of guidance,

And [the one who is] the firmest handle,

And [the one who is] Your proof/representative over the people of the world,

The one about whom it has been mentioned by the Leader of the people and the Support of all creations:

Soon, a part of me [Prophet Muḥammad] shall be buried in the land of Khurāsān (Iran),

None who are plagued with grief shall visit [there], except that Allāh will alleviate their anguish,

And no sinner [will visit there] except that Allāh will forgive his sins.

O Allāh! I ask you by his intercession which is realized,

And [I ask you] by his elevated status,

That You remove all distress from me,

And that You forgive my sins,

And that You make my words be heard (by him),

And that You convey to him my regards (my salāms).

Peace be upon you, O Proof of Allāh,

Peace be upon you, O Light (nūr) of Allāh,

Peace be upon you, O Holder of the knowledge of Allāh,

Peace be upon you, O repository of the wisdom of Allāh,

Peace be upon you, O custodian of the Book of Allāh,

Peace be upon you, O guardian of the secrets of Allāh,

You are the one in regards to whom it has been said that you fight against faithlessness.

And that you are the repressor of transgression.

ʿAlī, the Commander of the Faithful and the successor to the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe,

May the prayers of Allāh and His peace with him [has said]:

Soon, shall a man from my off-spring be unjustly killed by poison in the land of Khurāsān (Iran),

His name shall be [the same as] my name,

And the name of his father [shall be the same] name as that of the son of ʿImrān – Mūsā – peace with him.

So then whoever visits him in his loneliness (due be being separated from his family), Allāh will forgive that person’s sins – those which occurred in the past and those which will come in the future,

Even if those sins totaled the number of stars or the number of rain drops and the number of leaves on the trees.

My master! My master! Here I am, the one who is standing in your presence,

And my sins are in the number of the stars and the drops of rain and the leaves on the trees,

And I have no means through which they shall be erased except through earning Your pleasure,

My Master! I don’t find in my book of deeds, any action, which is greater to me that your visitation (ziyārat),

And how can it be when the Splitter of the Knowledge of the First to the Last [Imām Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Bāqir], prayers of Allāh be upon him, has said in his right:

A person shall come forth from my off-spring,

His name shall be the [same] name as the Commander of the Faithful [ʿAlī]

He will be buried in the land of Khurāsān (Iran),

The one who visits him, fully well knowing his rights, will find that Allāh shall grant him the reward of the individual who gave in charity before the victory (of Mecca – over the disbelievers) and those who fought.

So therefore, I come to you, paying a visit to you,

Full well-knowing your rights,

Cognizant of the fact that you are the Imām whose obedience is obligatory,

[You are one who is] desolate, martyred,

[I am] anticipating that which al-Ṣādiq, peace with him, said in regards to you:

A part of me shall be killed in the land of Khurāsān (Iran) in a city known as Ṭūs,

I will take the person who visits him, knowing fully well his right, by the hand on the Day of Judgement,

And will cause him to enter into Paradise,

Even if that person was one who performed the major sins.

It was said to him: What does it mean to know fully well his right?

He said: Knowing that indeed he is one whose obedience is obligatory,

That he is the stranger, martyr,

The one who visits him knowing well his right will find that Allāh will grant him the reward of seventy martyrs who gave their lives in the way of the Messenger of Allāh, peace with him and his family.

O son of the Messenger of Allāh,

I seek from Allāh, the Grand the Elevated, through [the performance of] your visitation, the forgiveness of my sins and the sins of my parents and the [sins of the] believing men and the believing women,

And I ask you for the promised deliverance in three stages [in the next life]:

At the time of the tying of our books of deeds [around our necks]; and at the time of passing over the bridge, and at the time of the weighing of our actions.

As you have said, and indeed your words are the truth:

Indeed the worst [person] which Allāh has created in my era shall kill me by poison,

Thereafter, he will bury me in a constrained abode and a strange land,

Therefore [know that] the one who visits me in my solitude, Allāh, the Noble and Grand, will write for him the reward of one hundred thousand accepted hajj and umrah trips,

And [the reward of] one hundred thousand people who struggle in Your way,

And that person shall be raised in our [the Ahlul Bayt’s] ranks,

And that person will be placed in the loftiest of standings in Paradise as our friend.

All praise belongs to Allāh who has honoured me with the Divine Providence (tawfīq) to perform your visitation in a location for which in regards to its merits, it has been stated:

This is, I swear by Allāh, a garden from amongst the gardens of paradise,

The one who visits me in such a locality is as the one who had visited the Messenger of Allāh, peace with him and his family,

And Allāh will write for this person the reward of one thousand appreciated hajj excursions,

And one thousand accepted minor-pilgrimages (Umrah),

And I and my fore-fathers will intercede for him on the Day of Judgement,

So then be my intercessor along with your purified fore-fathers and your chosen progeny.

O my master! You are the one whom none visit you except your privileged followers (Shia),

So then by your right and also by the right of your followers (Shīʿa), intercede for me,

And I ask (you to ask) Allāh that He raise me up (on the Day of Judgement) along with your true followers (Shia) in the firm area of mercy with you, the Ahlul Bayt,

I am with you and with those who are with you and am not with other than you,

I seek immunity with Allāh from your enemies,

And I seek close with Allāh through you,

Indeed I am a firm believer in your coming back,

[and] I have deep conviction in your return [before the end of the world – Rajʿat]

Expectant of your kingdom,

Complete awareness of the loftiness of your status and ranking,

Having full knowledge of the misguidance of those people who are against you,

A sincere friend to you and to your friends,

Having animosity with your enemies,

Taking refuge and sanctuary in your mausoleums.

O Allāh! Send Your prayers upon Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, the Messenger,

And [send Your prayers] upon Your [Prophet’s] successor [Imām ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib] and al-Batūl [Fāṭima Zahrā] and on the two youth [of paradise – al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn], and as-Sajjād and al-Bāqir and as-Ṣādiq and al-Kādhim and al-Riḍā, and al-Taqī and al-Naqī and al-ʿAskarī and al-Mahdī, Ṣāḥib al-Zamān – Your prayers be upon all of them.

O Allāh! Indeed these individuals are our masters and leaders, and our guides (to You) and our callers (to You).

O Allāh, enable us to unconditionally obey them,

And give us the good fortune of their intercession,

And raise us up [on the Day of Judgement] in their ranks,

And make us from amongst their choicest associates,

Through Your Mercy, O the one who is the Most Merciful,

Prayers of Allāh be upon Muḥammad and his purified, immaculate, infallible family members.

And all the praise belongs to Allāh – the Lord of the Universe.

At this point, one should proceed towards the head of Imām al-Riḍā, peace with him, perform a two-rakʿat ṣalāt for the visitation (ziyārat) and then one may pray to Allāh for his or her legitimate desires.
