Les thèmes de recherche concernent la reconstruction 3D. Le but est de trouver le modèle géométrique d’un objet réel (rigide ou mou) à partir d’un nuage de points capté sur sa surface. La forme peut être de topologie complexe.
Un autre aspect important est de pouvoir simuler le comportement dynamique des objets déformables. Ceci m’a amené à considérer le modèle physique en même temps que la forme géométrique des objets. Ces études sont menées dans le cadre du projet ETOILE (hadronthérapie) où les organes sont modélisés et sont mis en interaction à l’aide des modèles géométriques et mécaniques (approche discrète et continue) pour améliorer la balistique du traitement par les rayons ionisants.

Titulaire d'un DEA d'Informatique Fondamentale (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon) sur le thème du traitement d'images sur supercalculateur et d'une habilitation à diriger les recherches sur le thème de l'algorithmique distribuée, Stéphane Ubéda enseigne au département Télécommunications dans les domaines informatique (algorithmique, JAVA) et réseaux (Réseaux mobiles, conception et optimisation de réseaux). Il est responsable de la 5ème année du cycle ingénieur en télécommunications.
En recherche, il s'intéresse à l'algorithmique pour les applications en télécommunications, à l'optimisation de réseaux radiomobiles et aux architectures de sécurités pour l’informatique mobile. Il dirige le laboratoire CITI au sein de l'INSA de Lyon.
