   To tell you the truth I like the cinema as much as the theatre. As far as the cinema goes I prefer American films especially those which are produced by Columbia Pictures and 20^th Century Fox. It is good, when foreign films are dubbed in Russian but as a matter of fact I don’t mind subtitles either.
   

I have a brother who is a great cinema-goer. He knows many famous American scriptwriters, producers, film stars, designers and cameramen. He regularly reads the paper “CinemaNews” and knows which films have been released, and which ones are being shot.

   People who live in small towns near London do not often go to the theatre or cinema in London as the cost of the journey and the higher price of seats in London make this too expensive. The price of cinema seats outside London are between three shillings and five shillings. In England the word “cinema” is used if we mean a building for showing films but “pictures” is also British English and more colloquial than cinema. It is used to be the most common word in conversation. “Movies” (from moving pictures) is American English. Most English people know the word, but practically no one uses it. The first performance or showing in Great Britain begins about two o’clock in the afternoon an goes on from then until about half past ten. The cinema is not emptied between the performances, so that once you have paid for your seat you can stay in the cinema as long as you like. In one showing there is usually a main film (called the main feature), a shorter one, a news film, some advertisement and a “trailer” telling about the film for the next week.

   Firstly we may distinguish between feature films, documentaries and cartoons. Speaking about feature films we mean the following types: tragedies and dramas or simply serious films, historical films, war films, epic films, comedies, musicals and thrillers. Serious films deal with a difficult real-life situation which is to be resolved or with conflict of interests and emotions.
   

Historical is a film dealing with historical events.

Epic is a film depicting heroic events of the past on a grand scale, often with vast crowd scenes.

Musical is the successor of musical comedy – a film with songs and dances.

Thriller is a film describing thrilling events usually connected with crime especially murder.

Jim’s uncle took him to a cinema. The boy had never gone to the pictures before. It was dark when they went in and they felt their way to their seats and sat down. After ten minutes the uncle asked boy: “Are you enjoying it?” Jim answered: “Yes, but the seat is very uncomfortable. I can’t sit on it.” The uncle looked and said: “You’ll be more comfortable if you turn the seat down.”
