Didn’t need to (do) and needn’t have (done)
I didn’t need to ... = it was not necessary for me to ... (and I knew this at the time):
I didn’t need to get up early, so I didn’t.
I didn’t need to get up early, but it was a lovely morning, so I did.
‘I needn’t have (done) something’ = I did something but now I know that it was not necessary:
I got up very early as I had to be ready to leave. But in fact it didn’t take me much time to be ready. So, I needn’t have got up so early. I could have slept a bit longer.
Pay attention:
I need to go there. (not ‘I need go there’)
But:
I needn’t go there or I don’t need to go there.
Need you go there? or Do you need to go there?
I don’t think we need ask him. (modal verb)
But:
I think we don’t need to ask him. (independent verb)
Be needing (continuous form) is usually used only with a future tense often in the negative:
You won’t be needing your raincoat today – it isn’t going to rain.
Examples on unit:
Need as modal verb
Need as modal verb isn’t used in affirmative sentences. It is used mainly in negative and question and with words like hardly, scarcely, only, never (they are before or after need):
You needn’t go there so early.
Сиз у ерга бунчалик барвақт боришингиз керак эмас. (=ҳожати йўқ)
He has got a lot of time. He needn’t hurry.
Унинг вақти кўп. У шошилиши керак эмас
