HOLIDAYS AND SPECIAL DAYS IN BRITAIN
About 8 days of the year are public holidays, also called bank holidays. Many days of the year are given a special name, e.g. 1st May is called May Day. Some of these are traditionally connected with particular activities and customs. Festivals are usually days with a special religious meaning. Anniversaries celebrate the date of an important past event. Here are some special days with a name:
January 1st. New Year’s Day.
People say Happy New Year! to anyone they meet in the first few days of the New Year, and make New Year’s resolutions (=plans to improve their behaviour). I’m giving up smoking for the New Year.
February 14th. Valentine’s Day.
(not a holiday) People send Valentines (=unsigned cards) or give presents to someone they love, such as their girlfriend or boyfriend.
