SILENT LETTERS
The following letters may be silent in the pronunciation of some words: b, c, d, e, g, h, k.
In most cases their silence depends on their relationship to the letters that surround them, and their position in the word itself.
Rules are given where possible with the examples below:
b:

«b» is silent in the combination «mb» at the end of a word: bomb, numb, limb, thumb, dumb, lamb, tomb womb, comb, climb, succumb, aplomb, crumb and in the word plumber
«b» is also silent in «bt» at the end of a word: debt, doubt and also in subtle

c:

«c» is silent in «sc» at the beginning of a word before the letters «i», «e» and «y»: scene, scent, sceptre, scientist, scissors, scythe but not sceptic
«c» is silent also in the combination «scle» at the end of a word: muscle, corpuscle
