Modal auxiliary verbs
Can, may, might, ought, should, will, etc.
Need (Must do) and used (in the past) are also not used in a continuous form.
Exist
Represent, mean*
Belong to, have*, own*, possess*
Include, involve
(The following verbs can be followed by a particular quantity):
contain*, hold*
cost, count, measure, weigh
afford, owe*
equal, consist of*, amount to
Notice that many of these verbs can be used with other meanings in which the continuous form is possible:
Are you seeing (=visiting) your doctor tomorrow?
I can’t stop thinking about (=imagining) food.
I was just admiring (=looking at with admiration) your new kitchen.
Mother was busy weighing flour for the cakes.
