UNIT 31
SEQUENCE OF TENSES
A complex sentence consists of a main clause and a subordinate clause.

In English the tense of verb in a subordinate clause depends on the tense of verb in a main clause.

There are two main rules:

1. If the verb in a main clause is in present or future then the verb in a subordinate clause can be used in any tense according to the meaning:

Present

you are busy.

He knows that

you were busy.

you will be busy.

He has said that

he receives letters from her.

he has received a letter.

he received a letter yesterday.

he will receive a letter tomorrow.

Future

He will think that

you do it.

you have done it.

you did it yesterday.

you will do it.

2. If the verb in a main clause is in past then the verb in a subordinate clause must be only used in past:

I was sure that you knew her address.

I thought that he was waiting for me in the street.

He said that he had lost his watch.

She said that she would enter the University two years later.
