EX 245 TRANSLATE INTO UZBEK AND LEARN BY HEART.
Full stop / Period [.]

A full stop or period is used:

  • to mark the end of a sentence that is not a direct question and does not express a strong feeling.

I’ll meet you outside the cinema. Be there by half past eight.

Notice that a comma (,) can only mark the end of a sentence which is in quotation marks and followed by a reporting verb:

I think this bag is yours,” she said.

  • to mark shortened words and in people’s titles (this is becoming dated in Britain)

e.g. (=for example) · no. (=number)

Feb. 17th (=February 17th)

Mr. James · Mrs. Drew · Ms. Talbot · Dr. Grey

  • as one way to separate the numbers in dates and times

13.7.84 (=13 July 1984)

8.30 pm or 20.30 (=half past eight in the evening)
