Expensive

  • Expensive and costly are used to refer to money and also more generally: My trip was terribly expensive. · an expensive mistake · a costly war · costly in time and resources

Dear, pricey: informal, used of money: The coffee was good but rather dear. · St Tropez is a pricey place to stay.

When referring to money, the opposites of these words are cheap or, more formally, inexpensive and economical: I need some cheap shoes for work. · Southdown sheep are very economical to keep. (Notice that cheap is often used disapprovingly in American use).

Shops and businesses often use economy, bargain and budget to describe cheap goods and services. These adjectives come before the noun: coats from our economy range; bargain holidays; budget car hire.

  • Cost is common as a verb and noun: How much does it cost? · It cost me $30. · Can we afford the high cost of a new space project?
