EX 363 TRANSLATE INTO UZBEK AND LEARN BY HEART.
Sounds and hearing

  • Your ability to hear is called your hearing: it is one of the senses.

Someone who is unable to hear is deaf:

Desmond went deaf years ago.

Turn that damned music down, you’ll deafen me (=make me unable to hear)!

  • In general when you pay attention to a person or thing that you can hear, you listen to them. However, you hear events such as concerts or talks which happen in public.

Be quiet, I’m listening to the news/your mother/ some music.

We’re going to hear a heavy metal rock group at the National Exhibition Centre.

  • What you hear is a sound. A noise is an unpleasant, unwanted or loud sound.

Strange noises of tapping and rustling came from behind the wall.

The builders next door are making a lot of noise.

  • The following adjectives describe the loudness of a sound:

All day long there was a deafening noise of low-flying aircraft.

Our neighbour’s noisy dogs were barking all night.

Gary likes playing loud rock music in the evening.

The faint sound of bells came from the end of the valley.

I can only get to sleep in a quiet room.

The empty house was completely silent.

  • The verb to sound describes how something seems when you hear it or are told about it:

What’s that noise? It sounds like a plane.

Kevin’s new stereo sounds great/awful.

From what she says the film sounds interesting.
