EX 86 Translate into Uzbek and learn by heart.

  1. I am not a great cinema-goer, but now that they have built a new cinema near my house I go and see a film occasionally. Actually it was last Sunday that I saw for the second time the film that was produced by the Mosfilm Studio a few years ago – “The Diamond Arm”. This comedy is a funny mixture of fiction and reality. The plot of the film is the following: a group of rogues were trying to smuggle jewelry into Russia. They gave the jewels to the wrong man who was quite unsuspecting and who incidentally gave them away. When he came back to his town, they began to follow him to get hold of the jewels. A lot of funny episodes happened during this hunt. Finally the smugglers were traced down by the police.Yury Nikulin who was in the title-role is a great favourite with the public. Even though he sometimes didn’t do anything funny the audience started laughing the very moment he appeared on the screen. His very face was enough to set them roaring with laughter. As for me, I am not terribly fond of him though he is an actor of some talent. Another man playing the second best role, one of the gang, Andrey Mironov, was more to my taste. His acting was quite good. There was a couple of songs and some dancing too. There were some fantastic tricks as well. Such as a car lifted by a helicopter, pistol shots in the dark, hands moving in the light of diamonds, etc. I couldn’t call it exactly a very good film, but I must say I enjoyed it.

  2. The cinema programme in Uzbekistan usually includes a full-length feature film, a newsreel and a short documentary. The short is a two- or three-reel film. It may be a popular science film, a travelogue or animated cartoon. Sometimes a travelogue or a documentary is the main item on the programme. Many people prefer going to the cinema to matinee performances as there is little chance of their seeing “All sold out” sign over the box-office and they can always get tickets at the last moment. There is rarely any queue. Besides the seats are cheaper. In some cinemas a little concert is given for cinema audience before the show begins.

  3. I’m a great cinema-goer. I see all the best films that are on in Tashkent. I prefer feature films though I enjoy documentaries almost as much, to say nothing of animated cartoon films. I usually go to the cinema for the matinee performances. If I want to go to the cinema in the evening I book tickets beforehand.I always come to the cinema in time. If there is a long time to wait I usually look at the portraits of Uzbek and foreign film stars hanging on the walls of the foyer, or listen to a little concert that is usually given for the cinema audience in some cinemas of our city.

  4. One of the best films I’ve ever seen is “The Titanic” directed by James Cameron. “The Titanic” is a wide screen colour film and the music and colours are marvellous.I saw this film ages ago but I liked it so much that it stands out in my memory quite vividly. Some of the most outstanding actors and actresses appear in this film. My favourite actor Leonardo Di Caprio and actress Kate Winslet are in the title-roles. They are so beautiful that I enjoyed looking at them in close-ups. I liked this film from beginning to end. To my mind it is well done and the camerawork is superb. Besides I liked all the open-air scenes with their breath-taking beauty. And my favourite song “My heart will go on” sung by Celine Dion was the sound track to this film.
