Crimes of violence
In legal language, assault is the crime when an attacker threatens or tries to apply violence. In battery, actual bodily harm or grievous bodily harm, violence is actually used.
He was assaulted while walking home from a late-night party.
He was founded innocent of battering his two year old son.
No-one was killed in the robbery, but three men were later charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
When someone is killed intentionally this is called murder/homicide:
There was a sharp rise in the number of murders/homicides last year, especially in killings connected with drugs.
An 18 year old student was murdered by her jealous boyfriend.
If the killing was not fully intentional, the crime is manslaughter:
The drunken driver was convicted of manslaughter after his car left the road and hit three young people.
Illegally damaging other people’s property is called vandalism or (law) criminal damage.
My car was vandalized last night – all its windows were smashed.
