Each other
If we say Sam and Mike helped each other before their exams this means Sam helped Mike and Mike helped Sam. The phrase one another means the same but is more formal: James and I work in the same building but we seldom see one another.
More than two people can be involved: The four brothers were always hitting each other.
Sometimes a preposition is needed: People were shouting at each other.
Notice the possessive form:
The two sisters borrowed each other’s clothes.
Some verbs describe situations like this without needing each other (although this can be used for emphasis). Common examples are:
They met/parted in front of the town hall.
The ships passed/collided during the night.
Be careful that those wires don’t touch.
We shook hands and said hello.
Sally and her friend talked for hours.
“Have you met Ms Langley?” “No, but we’ve spoken on the telephone.”
They kissed, hugged, and within two months they married.
John and Sheila’s marriage didn’t work out, so they separated/divorced.
The teams fought/competed fairly.
The government and private companies cooperated in the project.
Be careful about the use of reflexive pronouns such as ‘themselves’, ‘ourselves’. They do not mean the same as ‘each other’. Compare They bought each other presents (each gave something to the other) and They bought themselves presents (each person kept the present they had bought). Sometimes the action would be unusual – We kissed ourselves – or impossible – They married themselves.
