Smells

There are several words meaning a smell. Some usually refer to pleasant smells: aroma, fragrance, while others are used for unpleasant smells: odour/odor, stink, stench. Perfume usually means a pleasant-smelling liquid worn by women. Only the words smell, reek and stink are used as verbs meaning to smell of something. In the following list, more pleasant smells are at the top.



A wonderful aroma of fresh coffee/baking bread/wine filled the room.

The little shop was full of aromatic plants/herbs/spices.

I could smell the fragrance of Isabel’s expensive French perfume.

She loved fragrant flowers/fruits/spices/food.

Police dogs are very good at following a person’s scent.

The garden had a sweet scent of flowers/fruit/herbs.

Most animals can recognize many more odours/odors than we can.

There was a strong odour/odor of smoke/ excrement/chemicals.


Pure water is completely odourless/odorless (=has no smell).

What’s the lovely/awful smell in here?

Our news house smells of paint.
