National Definition

There is no national definition of waste and hazardous waste used for the purpose of transboundary movements of waste in Dominican Republic. There are no wastes defined as, or considered to be hazardous wastes by national legislation in accordance with Art. 1, para 1(b) of the Basel Convention. In Dominican Republic there are no wastes other than those pursuant to Art. 1 (1)a and/or Art. 1 (1)b of the Basel Convention that require special consideration when subjected to transboundary movement.

Restrictions on Transboundary Movement	Amendment to the Basel Convention The amendment to the Basel Convention (Decision III/1) has been implemented in Dominican Republic.
	Restrictions on export for final disposal and for recovery Dominican Republic has no restrictions on the export of hazardous wastes and other wastes for final disposal and for recovery.
	Restrictions on import for final disposal Dominican Republic restricts the import of hazardous wastes and other wastes for final disposal. Article 100 of the National Environmental Law 64-00 prohibits import of any kind of Hazardous wastes.
	Restrictions on import for recovery Dominican Republic restricts the import of hazardous wastes and other wastes for recovery. Article 100 of the National Environmental Law 64-00 prohibits import of any kind of Hazardous wastes. The restriction covers any kind of hazardous waste, in all the territory of the Dominican Republic. The law 64-00 states in art.100 that the list of wastes to be controlled are those which are in the international conventions, in this case it is as in the Basel Convention.
	Restrictions on transit Dominican Republic restricts the transit of hazardous wastes and other wastes. Law 4201 of the Secretary of Public Health prohibits transit and disposal of medicinal wastes through the country.

Reduction and/or Elimination of Hazardous Waste Generation

National strategies/policies The Subsecretariat of Environmental Management is the institution responsible for imposing penalties on companies that generate wastes and do not manage them in an environmentally sound manner. Legislation, regulations and guidelines The existing legislation is Act 64-00 (General Act on the Environment and Natural Resources). Regulations have been established for the more specific management of wastes.

Measures taken by industries/waste generators Some industries manage their own wastes (they have treatment plants), others send their wastes to another country for disposal, and others engage in publicity campaigns for the conservation of the environment.
