The thirty-year anniversary of the Soweto uprising is marked this year; and the events of 16 June 1976 are being retold and re-examined.

The Commission was called into life just eight days after the initial pupil-led rebellion started. The sole member of the Commission was Judge Petrus Malan Cillie, who co-opted various others to serve with him at certain stages of his investigation. Peterson's name has become synonymous with the events of 16 June 1976. With hindsight, what happened that Wednesday in June irrevocably changed South Africa and Southern Africa's direction. One of the most important documents pertaining to South Africa's recent past.

The sabotage of thirteen of Zimbabwe's military aircraft led suspicion to fall on several white airmen, leading to their arrest and imprisonment. All but seven were released. They were acquitted, then re-detained, and finally expelled from the country.

Hole describes the aura that surrounded those who travelled "up-country" and the rumours that fuelled interest and desire to see that part of the world north of Bulawayo. He describes the hardships encountered although they were later forgotten "or merely recalled with a grin". Hole's account of the early days of Rhodesia and Rhodes makes perceptive reading.

Chaplin (1866-1833) was appointed by C.J. Rhodes to directorships within his companies. He was the last president of the Chartered Company and the first administrator of Southern Rhodesia.

Renwick was British Ambassador to South Africa during the period leading up to the release of Nelson Mandela. He had previously been an adviser to Lord Carrington during the Lancaster House negotiations which ended the Rhodesian conflict; and to Lord Soames, the last Governor of Rhodesia. He was therefore uniquely placed to observe events.

In this scholarly work, Tabler follows in chronological order the stories of the early hunters, explorers, missionaries and traders who opened up the area that became known as Southern Rhodesia.
