On 7 March 2004, Zimbabwean police impounded an American plane carrying sixty-four men en route to Equatorial Guinea, on suspicion that they were mercenaries. Led by a former SAS officer, Simon Mann, they were alledgedly going to overthrow the government of Obiang Nguema- not to ensure democracy in the region, but to secure a share of the country's oil wealth. The plot failed and the men were imprisoned in Zimbawe and Equatorial Guinea.

Jonker took her own life in 1965, at the age of thirty-two. Nelson Mandela quoted from her poetry in his speech at his inauguration as South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. In a later edition of her VERSAMELDE WERKE Jack Cope and William Plomer stated in their introduction that: "…she was deeply affected by the racial tensions in her own country and her poems reveal her emotional involvement with the deprived and the oppressed, with the child, the aged person and the outcast, as well as with the bewilderments of her own identity."

The Breynes were wealthy merchants of Danzig who collected rare and exotic plants. Father and son were both celebrated botanists. Jakob made a collection of water-colour drawings of Cape plants by several artists. Eighty-six were bound together in 1724 in an album for his son, Johann Philipp, and given the title FLORA CAPENSIS.

Kotze stood against Kruger and P.J. Joubert for the Z.A.R. presidency. They received 7854 and 7009 votes respectively, and Kotze received 81. He had a severe disagreement with Kruger concerning legal matters, eventually leaving the Z.A.R. His distinguished legal career in the Cape led to a knighthood.
