Generaal Jan Kemp and his commando of 600 rebellious boers trekked across the Kalahari Desert, covering over 700 km in 27 days in order to reach the German South West African border. They were eventually forced to surrender at Upington a few months later, having failed in their attempt to overthrow Smuts during the 1914-1915 Rebellion.
