Elliott (1870-1938) came to the Cape in 1900. Although he was not a professional photographer, he became interested in photographing his surroundings. Elliott's collection (now owned by the State) provides an invaluable record of the Cape in the early 20th century. Taken mainly in the winter months, his architectural photographs are unrivalled and an invaluable record of the Cape's unique architectural style.

A very readable account of his life, filled with humorous stories, from helping Sol Kerzner choose a private jet and witnessing a John McEnroe tantrum, to playing serious tennis with Cliff Drysdale (his brother-in-law), Abe Segal and others.

The advent of democracy in South Africa brought with it new social commentators. Along with Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro), the creators of the Madam & Eve series gained large followings. The main protagonists and the supporting cast make pertinent and amusing comments on current events across South Africa and early editions provide an historical view of how South Africa developed.

Natalie du Toit lost a lower leg after an horrific scooter accident in 2001, but that did not end her swimming career. In 2002 Natalie made history by swimming in both able-bodied and disabled events at the Commonwealth Games, reaching the 800m freestyle (able-bodied) final. She competed in both the Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing 2008.

Hind gives examples of alleged UFO visits to southern Africa, including the landing of a caravan-type vehicle on Danie van Graan's farm near Loxton (he at first thought it belonged to prospectors looking for uranium, but changed his mind when he saw the figures in the vehicle…). Hind includes the case of a tennis court that was mysteriously damaged at Rosmead (near Middleburg). The event was corroborated by several soldiers serving at a nearby military base. Photographic evidence included!

The story of the shipwreck of the Dunedin Star (which was not named in the first edition) and the subsequent ill-fated rescue attempts by tug, ship and aeroplane before, finally, an overland expedition succeeded in reaching the castaways and their stranded would-be rescuers.

Munnik (1846-1935) grew up in Cape Town, but moved to the Transvaal when gold was discovered at Barberton. He fought for the Boers in the South African War, was captured and spent time in India. On his return, he settled in the northern Transvaal and supported General Hertzog.

Pocock settled at the Cape as a surgeon's apprentice. His journals give insight into the daily life of the ordinary citizen of Victorian Cape Town between 1830-1876.

Studying to be a medical doctor at the University of Natal Medical School, Ramphele was drawn into the circle of activists centred around Steve Biko of the Black Consciousness Movement. She was serving a banning order when he was killed, and when this was lifted in the early 1980s she moved into the world of academia and writing. After her tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town she took up a position at the World Bank.

Compiled mostly from Sonn's presidential addresses to the C.T.P.A. Sonn acted as the South African ambassador to the United States from 1995-1998. He was also co-founder of New Africa Investments, Chancellor of the University of the Free State, and now sits on numerous boards.

The discovery of diamonds and gold in South Africa in the late 19th century led to the accumulation of considerable wealth by some individuals. Most later settled in Britain and became known as the South African millionaires or "Randlords". They acquired properties and possessions that symbolised wealth in Europe, most notably artworks, which they collected with great enthusiasm. In London in the 1890s they were the most prominent collectors of old masters, altering the price levels of the art market. The individuals focused on in this book are Sir Lionel & Lady Philips, Sir Joseph Robinson (see no. 188), Sir Max Michaelis, Alfred Beit, Sir Otto Beit and Sir Julius Wernher.

Swanepoel, in the preface, indicated that he was prepared to travel 500 miles in a weekend in order to collect just one specimen! Such dedication led him to produce the first widely available monograph on this subject.

"...much interesting and instructive information." Mendelssohn, vol. 2, p. 527. Alys Fane Trotter (1862-1962) spent just three years at the Cape (1896-98) but what a productive time it was! Her husband was the Government Engineer and Mrs Trotter used her time to cycle all over the countryside, drawing and making notes about her surroundings. The result was OLD COLONIAL HOUSES with an introduction by Sir Herbert Baker; and this book. Her work greatly increased awareness of Cape Dutch houses amongst the general public. Her obituary in the Cape Times was headed "First historian of old Cape houses dies".

During his stay at the Cape, Victorin devoted his studies mainly to the George-Knysna-Oudtshoorn area. He hunted, preserved and collected many mammals, birds, amphibians and insects. He also made numerous sketches and drawings and wrote informative letters and diary notes.

Walton traces the development of folk building throughout South Africa. "He has followed the opening up of the country and describes the homesteads which characterise each region. Weinberg recounts his experiences as a doctor in South West Africa (Nambia) from 1926 to 1939. Based at Gibeon, he travelled north and south on the main railway in a caboose, which allowed him to administer to patients who, on seeing the red cross painted on the train, were allowed to flag it down. He also discusses the affect Hitler's rise to power had on the formerly German territory.
