Purpose: The primary purpose of this qualification is to develop students to become community development leaders in the facilitation of processes, techniques and principles in the initiation, planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and sustainment of developmental projects and programmes, based on people-centred, asset-based participatory theoretical approaches to address inequality, poverty and injustice. Further students will be able to facilitate the establishment and management of community based organisations within the context of community economic development.

Purpose: This degree is aimed at understanding the issues of poverty, inequality, injustices and changing societies. Students acquire knowledge as well as practical and academic skills with regard to the attempts to address these challenges by means of development projects, programmes and policies. This involves the management and evaluation of interventions as well as the contexts that are relevant. Development Studies is presented as multi-disciplinary and holistic. As one of the few undergraduate programmes in Development Studies in the country, this qualification is a strong basis for a career in the field of development or further study in Development Studies.

The second major and electives are chosen from:

Majors and electives: Geography, Philosophy, Psychology (1A&1B, 2C&2F, 3E&3F) or
Public Management and Governance.
Sociology. (These subjects are available to students to choose from, on condition that there are no time table clashes.)
** Students who have achieved an A or B for English in matric may substitute English 1C &
1D with another elective.
Practical:
The practical for the subject Development Studies as set out in the Regulations is supplementary for students in the curriculum Development Studies. This is also applicable if students follow only two semester modules in Development Studies.
