The nature and functions of mass communication. Historic overview of the South African mass media. Genres of the mass media. Introduction to theoretical underpinnings of studying mass media phenomena. Introduction to relevant ethical and legal aspects of the media.
Purpose:
The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the nature and functions of mass communication; to provide an historic overview of the South African mass media; to introduce learners to the genres of the mass media; to introduce the theoretical underpinnings of studying mass media phenomena; and to provide an introduction to relevant ethical and legal aspects of the media.
Outcomes:

The purpose of this module is to contextualise the historical development and fundamental aspects of communication research; to provide learners with an overview of the elements of the communication research process, types of research and methodological aspects of research, as well as an introduction to ethical issues in communication research. This knowledge is applied on the practical level.

Communication as organisational process and the subsequent emerging issues relevant to the organisational functioning; the origin of organisational communication and the development of the organisational communication field and perspectives; selected organisational communication theories and issues, such as leadership, ethics, diversity and technology.
Purpose:
The purpose of this module is to investigate communication as organisational process and the subsequent emerging issues relevant to organisational function, such as leadership, ethics, diversity and technology. This module also focuses on the origin of organisational communication, the development of the organisational communication field and perspectives and selected organisational communication theories.
Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module learners should be able to:

Content:
Introduction to theories of globalisation; new communication technology; the information and communication revolution; media and technology; and virtual communication contexts. The impact of global communication; multi- and transcultural aspects of communication; popular (pop) culture and globalisation.
Purpose:
The purpose of this module is to introduce learner to theories of globalisation; to investigate aspects around new communication technology; and to investigate recent societal changes as are linked to the information and communication revolution. This includes the impact of globalisation and global communication on society in terms of multi- and transcultural aspects of communication, and popular culture.
Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module learners should be able to:

Give an overview of theories of globalisation as are applicable to the globalised
communication industry.

Critically discuss the information and communication revolution understanding.

Give a critical account of the impact of new communication technology on specific
