Purpose: The aim of this qualification is to develop students’ applied competence in Film and Television Studies. Applied competence implies the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and application of communication principles related to Film and Television Studies within relevant sectors of the electronic media and the broadcasting industry. Furthermore, students will develop the ability to internalise, reflect on, and communicate strategic decisions and applications effectively through the correct and suitable use of scientific language and technical terminology associated with Film and Television Studies. The qualification will facilitate effective learning through the exposure to and the application of appropriate learning styles, thereby enabling the student to navigate and holistically manage the dynamic context of Film and Television Studies.

The curriculum for the BA (Film and Television Studies) programme consists of 24 semester modules compiled as follows:

  Majors: A language (Afrikaans, English, French, isiZulu and Sepedi), Communication, Psychology and Sociology.
  

• 
  Alternative majors: A language (Greek, Latin (not offered in 2018) and Modern Greek), Anthropology and Classical Cultures and Mythologies. (These subjects are available to students to choose from, on condition that there are no time table clashes).
  

• 
  Electives: A language (Afrikaans, English, French, isiZulu and Sepedi), Communication as compulsory two-year minor.*, Psychology and Sociology.
  

• 
  Alternative electives: A language (Greek, Latin (not offered in 2018) and Modern Greek), Anthropology, Classical Cultures and Mythologies. Development Studies, Historical Studies and Philosophy. (These subjects are available to students to choose from, on condition that there are no time table clashes).
  

* Communication (CMS) is compulsory up to second-year level for all students. If CMS is

chosen as a major, an additional four modules from the list of elective minors must be

included as a minor elective up to second-year level.  If a major other than CMS is selected

from the elective majors, CMS is a compulsory minor up to second-year level.

 

** Students who have achieved an A or B for English in matric may substitute English 1C &

1D with another elective. Students who select English as a major should register for English

1A&1B and may substitute English 1C&1D with another elective. Student who passes

English 1C&1D may be permitted to register for English 2A&2B at the discretion of the

Head of Department of English.

Equipment: Film and Television Studies students are required to purchase digital video tapes on which they will shoot their projects. Students may be required to have access to/supply their own equipment to complete their practical assignments.

Students are not allowed to register for this degree for the first time in the second semester.

Purpose: The aim of the qualification is to develop students’ applied competence in Journalism. Applied competence implies the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and application of communication principles related to the context of Journalism within relevant sectors of the electronic and print media and the broadcasting industry. Furthermore, students will develop the ability to internalise, reflect on and communicate strategic decisions and applications effectively through the correct and suitable use of scientific language and technical terminology associated with Journalism. The qualification will facilitate effective learning through the exposure to and application of appropriate learning styles, thereby enabling them to navigate and holistically manage the dynamic context of Journalism.

Students are not allowed to register for the first time in the second semester for this degree.
