Msc in Biochemistry Dissertation Project – 2nd Cycle

BACKGROUND

OBJECTIVES


This project aims to characterize the release profiles and microbiological activity of antibiotic loaded bone cements. Specifically:

1. 
   Characterize drug release profiles in different body fluids
   
2. 
   Evaluate bone cements interaction with sessile and biofilm organized bacteria.
   

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

1. 
   
   The MsC thesis will include the following tasks
   
   1. 
      Literature review and planning of the experimental protocols.
      
   1. 
      Production of the cements (plain and loaded with antibiotics).
      
   2. 
      Characterization of the drug release profiles.
      
   3. 
      General microbiological technical approaches, learning basic procedures for working with bacteria.
      
   4. 
      Microbiological assays.
      
   
   4.1) Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for sessile and biofilm organized bacteria

   4.2) Minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC) for sessile and biofilm organized bacteria

   
   
   4.2) Biofilm assembly on cements
   
   5. 
      Thesis writing.
