Beta-decay Studies of Exotic pf-shell Nuclei at GANIL

Studying the structure of nuclei and understanding how they behave can be done through different techniques. The results and the models which have been extracted can be improved by the experiments and the theoretical studies to have a detailed idea on nuclei. In order to go over the stability valley, one of the well-known decay by nuclei is the beta-decay. Depending on how many protons and neutrons they have, nuclei move through the chart as the “nature” says. In this thesis, it is based on to study the beta decay of pf-shell nuclei in the nuclear chart. For this reason, an experiment based on fragmentation procedure to produce exotic nuclei was held at GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds), France with a beam 64Zn at an energy of 79 MeV / nucleon hitting the target 58Ni with a 235 mg/cm² density. Observing beta decays of these exotic nuclei is one of the reasons to use this kind of experiment. The aim of this work was to observe the beta decay of 58Zn (Z=30) nucleus to 58Cu (Z=29) nucleus. Following the analysis procedure, 1+ excited states of 58Cu have been observed. Moreover, the half life of 58Zn has been measured and the results were compared with the literature. Depending on the isospin number (Tz) that nuclei have, the mirror works for Tz= ±1 and Tz= ±2 can be studied within the name mirror systems. Assuming that isospin is a good quantum number, symmetry is expected for mirror nuclei and the GT transitions for these nuclei. Tz= -1 is the isospin value of 58Zn shows that this nucleus has the mirror system with 58Ni (Tz= +1). Therefore, it is expected to relate the Gamow – Teller Transitions for the beta decay 58Zn→58Cu and 58Ni(3He,t)58Cu charge exchange reaction which have been done for these nuclei. The measured half life of the beta decay and the gamma decays from the observed excited states of the daughter nucleus showed in this thesis can provide the calculation of the absolute Gamow – Teller Transition Strengths (B(GT)) for the mirror charge exchange reaction.
